Howdy all,
I have been busy with work lately and today was the first chance to hunt in a while. Anyway, I decided to do a water hunt this evening and think I might have scored. Aside from the usual clad and trash, I managed one good ring. I am 90% sure its Platinum but don't recognize the hallmark. I included a sketch of the hallmark since my macro wasn't cooperating. Please feel free to chime in if ya have any opinion at all. Thanks for looking and luck in the hunt.

I acid tested the ring and it held up to the platinum solution perfectly. I would just feel better with a second opinion on the hallmark.

Nice stuff JuJu :headbang:
Don't listen to Tank - he's obviously just jealous :tongue3:

I know nothing about Platinum marks so I did a quick search and found this comment
Platinum is marked with “plat” or “pt” in most cases, often followed by a number showing the platinum content.
from http://en.allexperts.com/q/Jewelry-Gems-Minerals-689/Marking-inside-ring-1.htm

Pt is the chemical formula for Platinum.

I suspect the marks indicate the maker only.
Don't take my word for it though, get it checked.

Cheers, Mike

Great looking ring! We gotta get together and hunt sometime before summer is over. I think I'm finally going to be doing a little detecting again within the next week or two.

I am wondering if the part with the G in it is a Free Mason's emblem? Sure looks like it. As to the PL, as another poster pointed out, does not seem standard for platinum. Good luck though. Definitely jeweler will tell.

Might be an early platinum ring.

During the 1910-1930 period, platinum was not always stamped PL or PT. Your ring looks to be raised on the edges around what are likely to be very small diamonds. Some people are allergic to gold, and platinum was a good alternative. Platinum at one time was less valuable than gold, and western miners used to curse it for clogging up the riffles in their gold dredges, which allowed the more valuable gold to flow out with the tailings.

Several beach black-sand placer mines in southwestern Oregon had higher platinum content than gold content. Oregon had a hard-rock platinum mine in the US for several years until it closed. Odd thing: the mine was worked for the gold content, but produced more platinum than gold?!? Was on a tributary of the Rogue River.

Ex brother-in-law and I found a tiny platinum nugget near Powers. He kept it. Don't remember finding any gold that trip.

It looks good to me, like Platinum, but what did it ring up as on your MXT? How deep?

Sweet looking ring :icon_salut: Hope your acid test rings true. If so I can only guess that the ice is real as well.
