I was researching an old park where I have found some wheats before but tried a new part of the park after talking to a friend at work. Boy am I glad I did. After hunting another park and finding some clad I made the drive to the park. My first signal was a quarter about 6" deep. When I saw it was silver I was excited thinking it was a silver washington quarter. After I got it out of the hole I then saw that it was a Standing Liberty Quarter. Even better. Then a couple steps from there I got another signal. It looked like a dog tag or medallian. Then a couple more steps I got another signal. I was really pumped now because it looked like a half dime. All three were in about a ten foot circle next to a very large tree. I walked around and found a few pennies and a couple quarters (clad although one was 1967) and then made the trip home. I only hunted for about two hours as the heat index was over 100 and I was sweating like crazy even in the shade. After cleaning the coins the standing liberty quarter is wore so smooth there is no date, the dog tag or medallian just has a number on it and what I thought was a half dime was actually a Buffalo Bill coin. The front says National Heroes Buffalo Bill 1846-1917 and the back reads Mazuma Play Money with 10 in the middle. I found three wheats that I thought were clad. They were 1914, 1919 and 1941. They cleaned up better than the clad pennies which is alright by me. I had today off as I have to work this weekend but my next free day off I am going back.

Nice finds sir!!! I just found a standing liberty too - yesterday. Same condition as yours unfortunately - no date. I've attached a pic. Doesn't it just stink when you find something that might have some worth to it and you cannot get a date :dontknow: But, better to be in your collection than still in the ground :laughing7:

Standing liberties are tough to get dates from. They almost always seem to be worn out.

Go back and hit that site hard for an all-dayer :headbang:

My hat is off to you for those great finds in this miserable weather. As was said, the SLs are generally a weak strike. HH, Quindy

I believe it was put in a pack of Mazuma gum in the mid 1930's from what I have found so far.

The quarter is most likely going to be dated between 1917-1924. 1916 & 1917 var 1 had no stars under the eagle. 1917 v2 - 1924 did not have a recessed date, and that looks like what you have. 1925-1930 have a recessed date and can usually be seen even after a lot of wear.

Cool finds!!!

Very interested in your holed disk. Looks like 9 and something on one side, and 0 0 (and maybe a larger 0) on the other side. More importantly, the 0 side looks to have the initials A B scratched into it.

The SLQ had me going for a bit. I can see a 6 in the last number, and was hoping ... but no, got the three stars under the eagle reverse, so cannot be a 1916. SO CLOSE! Pretty worn for a 1926, but still seems the most likely question to what the date is. Can't see any mintmark.

Couple of nice wheaties, too. Need to find me some more of those!

OMG, you found my coin! (Buffalo Bill). I thought it was lost forever!  In case you are wondering where it came from see pic. I believe it's 1930's vintage.
Ooops, sorry treasurehound. just read your previous post. I guess you already knew where it came from. Oh well.

Question. It has been years since I have found a SLQ other than a seeded club hunt and was wondering how they get so worn. Were they worn from wear in a pocket before they were lost or did the ground actually wear them down. I know that these and the walking liberty half dollars wear very easily.
