below you see a "innocent" looking travel pass looking document unless you know the history of its nazi era --
on july 5th of 1935 the Vessel Monte Oliva departed Hamburg , Germany , the vessel went to south american ports -- (note this is a this is a KDF membership document ) KDF -or (strength thru joy) cruises were for nazi party members -- a form of low cost govt "for the workers" cruise ship program but it served other "uses" as well.

the german govt shortly after hilter took over power --sent many "sleeper type" spy / recruiter type units into south america under the cover of hydro engineers and other science / farming programs some by the KDF travel program vessels.

during WW2 some of these units slipped from south american into the usa -- some became farmers and used the access they gained from delivering food to the local areas military bases to "spy" on the americans --this item was found in "farming" books dated from 1943 gathered at a estate sale from a old area farm

it was well known that the nazi's gave their agents money to buy off information and as pay -- have to wonder was the guy --who lived there a nazi spy that took his "money" and bought a ranch post war --hiding his past all along?

That is a neat find! I dabble in WWII memorabilia/collectables and have come across alot of work passes, passports, and various documents. It is really to think about all the possibilities when you see names and places like that.

The Germans then would not have needed professional spies for farms.

350,000 German POWs were kept in the US, and many were sent to work on farms.

Americans also visited Germany then.
They had a "thoroughly enjoyable journey across Germany".

the spys were planted as " long term sleepers" in 1935 in south america --they were meant for long term * recuiting and spying -- the germans knew as far back as 1935 that their ideals would lead to war , so they took advantage of the "lax" travel rules at that time and sent folks oveseas to south america especially * to recruit "converts" to the nazi case.

some of these sleeper agents during the war * came from up from south america under cover using fake IDS to the USA and worked as "farm hands" -- on farms which brought food from american farms to the to us military bases here in the states and also to transport vessels on the waterfront --when they delivered the food --they "spied" finding out info which they passed on-- which the u boat wolf packs used to target the the ships went they to sea.

william folks taken on the nazi kdf cruises --(strength thru joy)--- were nazi party members * thus they were in the "club" so to speak . -- belonging to the nazi "party" in 1935 had it perks --this was one of them.

in 1935 this was the ports of call list for kdf vessels like the Monte Olivia-- hamburg, bremen (german starting ports-also known areas when german "spy" training schools were set up ) -- then off to boulogue sur mer (france*) then dover , south hampton (england*) then la coruna , villagarcia, vigo (spain --the nazis were a ally with the nationist franco during spains civil war --the condor leigon *-- spain was supposedly neutral during the war but was a hot bed for nazi spy rings ) then lexicoes, lisbon, madeira, (portugal-- again a "neutral" country but often used as a spy info swapping point) then las palmas (canary islands- spanish controlled *)--pernambuco, bahia, rio de janeiro, santos, sao francisco do sul , rio grande (brazil * --which was a hot bed area for nazi spys in south america as well as a relay area form messages / information to / from america*) then montevido (uruguay ) and finally buenos aires (argentina * another nazi spy hot bed area during the war) --- note the vessels only stopped at 1 of 3 types of locations --- france and england * future enemys --(to drop off or pick up spy info ) -- supposedly nuetral counties in the future war effort that the nazis used as spy swap over info points (spain and portugal) and south american countries that were used as spy headquarters in south american and as relay stations for info from america* during the war.

late in the war nazi's smuggled gold to the three south american countries -- brazil, uruguay, and argentina --their agents there with the aid of the vatican "rat line" helped "wanted" war crime nazi's escape to south america under fake names and papers. --the smuggled gold help set them up in their new lives.--this was the "odessa" operation
