1830's One-Piece Eagle "R" Button from the 1749 Farthing Site

We got out yesterday to a new site, but we got skunked, so we headed back to the site that has produced every outing that we were there. This site was where Chris dug his killer 1749 farthing.

Well, needless to say, I wasn't swinging long before I got a nice penny reading at three inches deep. I saw this in the plug and instantly thought, "One-Piece Military?" We rarely ever dig early military buttons on our sites, so I wasn't getting my hopes up high. However, when I started field cleaning it, I noticed an eagle on it. That is when I blurted out what I found to Kirk and Chris.

Here it is cleaned up! It is my first early military button (Pre-Civil War). The backmark reads: "Superior Quality WHH & Co."

Not too bad of a relic. We are due for some coppers. Serious as a heart attack. :icon_thumleft: 1840s or 1850s.

Nice button Kyle, the McGuinn book says 1830's for that backmark, probably made by Scovill and sold by W H Horstmann & Co. If the letter is an R than it is the Albert's RF 15A "Superior Quality/W.H.H. & Co." rm; 20mm RV10 (Albert's Ref)

Wait, I think it is an "R" now, Don. Would this make it any more special?

Don Troiani emailed me some more information as well:

"Mexican War Regiment of Rifles button and probably an officer's."

That's a real nice one Kyle and could have been worn in the CW too. HH, Quindy.

Sweet!
I live for buttons like these.
It is a Horstman's and it is a great find.
That button is going to clean up nicely.
Here's some more great news, there might be more out there!

Alright Kyle that's a nice Eagle "R". Those Eagle "R"s (Riflemen) are tough to find. I'd MUCH rather have that than a KGII or run of the mill Large Cent! Congrats on a Very Nice Early one Piece Eagle!!! :headbang:

Nice early military button Kyle. Like Josh said I would take one of them over a large cent anyday. Especially one in that kind of condition. :icon_thumright:
