Detecting today with my partner on an old home site that also has CW troop movements connection.

Found this buttplate. It is made of brass. As you can see it has 487 stamped on the upper side of the tang. Has WX stamped on the underside by the screw hole. The X doesn't show well in the photo but it is there and can be seen clearly with a glass.

Anyone know what weapon this came off of? I can't see a civilian weapon having a number stamped on it, I figure this is a quick way for a soldier to pick out his weapon from a stack of arms.

Sure would love to know if is Union or Confederate. Anyone have any knowledge of these things?

Nice find. i bet those guys in "What is It section" could give you model and date. Great condition you would hope the rest of the gun was a few feet away.

Looks like an Enfield to me. And it is a nice little find with a $35 or $40 price tag. Congratulations!

I'm sure there is still a lot to be found where you discovered the butt plate.

TnMountains,

Boy do I hope the rest is nearby. However since there were no screws in it nor near it I suspect it had been removed from the weapon.

Thanks to all for the responses and ID.
