NOTE: Just today 4-25-06 I believe the mystery of the wheel has been solved. Scroll down until you find my new post "Mystery Solved."

Here's the original post...

Okay, maybe it wasn't exactly in the sky. ::) It was in a tree though.

I couldn't believe my eyes. Here I'm THing along an old path in the middle of nowhere and I come upon this old car wheel grown into a tree. You don't see this every day ;D

The trail wasn't very productive today. All newer coins this time.

I'll tell you one thing...I was pooped out a bit after this climb! These northern Michigan hills are steep and tall. And of course I had to leave today without my climbing boots.

I'll have to come back to this spot this fall when the color is full. I'll return and get some pictures then.

The trails were made mostly by the lumberjacks and some by the woodland Indians.

Re: I SAW A WHEEL IN THE SKY!

Badger,

Very interesting find. You know that the wheel had to placed at the hieght it is now. Tree trunks don't grow verticle they grow outward ( or the girth increases ). This theroy is proven by old fence lines you see coming out of the center of old cedar trees. The fence elevation remains the same even over a 100 years.

Some kind of marker? I'd say yes!

Thanks for the post and nice pictures,

Smartin

OK, here's a theory from another up nort' woodtick:

Trees grow out, not up at their base, so that wheel is about as far off the ground as it was when it was put there.

It looks like it may still have a spindle in the hub, and it doesn't appear to have been hung by the bolt holes.

My guess is that it was put there years ago without a tire and used as a pully for dragging logs

Just my 2 cents worth.

Diggem

I'd have to agree with Diggem. I used to work at a ski resort that started in the late 30's and there are still 2 slopes that have an old tire rim up in a tree at the top of the slopes. They were used as pulleys for the old tow ropes that were used to get to the top. They used the old rims because they were easy to get, cheap, and served the purpose well.

But thats also just my 2 cents. So I'd guess between me and Diggem that make 4 cents worth of ideas. Anyone have anything else?

Wheel Mystery Solved Today!

Hi all,

I went back up to the WHEEL today and dug something that brought something back to mind I hadn't thought about in years.

Several years ago an oldtimer told me the military used these woods for training during the WW1 and WW2 eras.

In a picture below you'll see a couple rolls of solid copper wire I dug by the WHEEL. The oldtimer told me the military stretched copper wire all over these woods.

My guess is (and it's just a guess) the WHEEL was put there by the military prior to or during WW2. I believe they used it as a communications wire holder.

What do you think?

All I could find by the WHEEL was copper wire and various wire fittings.

On the way back down this giant hill I got a silver signal only 1 inch deep. I dug the 2001 trinket. I reduced the discrimination to just above iron and found the keys about 1 foot from the trinket. Somebody really wiped out on this steep hill. I was thinking, poor sucker! Oh well, at least he went doing what he liked ...LOL!

I also found the usual number of newer coins and shells.

Thanks for reading all this!

Oh, can U guess what the large round dig turned out to be? It's the last picture in the group.

;D This has been a VERY interesting read...really enjoyed all of it! Had lots of thoughts on the way to the end and by the time I get to where I'm ready to post my thoughts, you have blown them all to bits! LOL :D Seeing all those trees eating everything up reminds me, of the trees that talk to Dorthy in the Wizard Of OZ, where they get mad at her and throw their apple at her! Awesome pics and interesting thoughts!

In response to the tree-growing-in-the-engine-of-an-old-car pictures:

"so thats what happened to my apple seed" or "i sould probably cut that down before i start that up"

Also, will you sell the copper, it could be very valuble to a recycling plant

Copper price jumped 60% in the last few days I just read today.

Something like $3.30 a pound now. I have been reading lately about how people are finding their air conditioners torn up because thieves are trying to get at the copper tubing inside them.

I was surprised to see that picture of the bike in the tree. I know exactly where that is! It is on Vashon Island, WA, just off the main highway, near Sound Food, back in the bushes a ways.

Nope, this one is in northern Michigan. And this is a car wheel rim ca. 1934.

If you can, get a photo of the one you know about. This would be cool to see.

Thanks,

Badger
