1700's coin?

found this coin 6"in the ground. Its very hard to read but goergian or goerge and looks like roman numeral also copper.

edit to add: 25% would be good for a re-size on your original file (without any cropping).

roger found in Bucks county Pa near a 1700's house. Looking at the high points it looks like a british colonial copper like the one featured in w&et mag. below this post. Look at the pics all the way to the right and click Also found a larger one but very very hard to make out.

King George II Farthing or Halfpenny.. looks like the younger head (1730's i think)

here's one with the later(older) head i dug a couple weeks ago (1753)

It's still a great find.. The one I posted wasn't to belittle yours.. It's the only one I've dug with any detail

If you found a larger one, yours is probably a farthing (1/2 of a halfpenny) which seem to be more uncommon finds here than the halfpennies. Common? Not really.. They were a circulated coinage in colonial days and probably the most often found colonial coins, but I wouldn't label them as "common".

Great job on the KG. Jeff is right, there not exactly common, though you see a good amount posted on T-Net every year. I think its safe to say that we all love to find them.

Agreed, looks like a Geo II Farthing

Common is a matter of context, yes common over here (UK), much less common in some areas of the States & probably near damn impossible in others. Just depends on the history & type of early activity of the site.

How large is it in millimeters? How much does it weigh in grams? That will tell you if it's a Half Penny or a farthing. If it's the size of a quarter then it's a Farthing. Half dollar sized is a Half Penny.

common?? what cru said! over there yes! over here your more apt to find them on the east coast. but it would be uncommon to find them in the west coast. alot of people wouldnt even find them here in the east(mass) it depends what type of hunter you are. i love finding them! i have about 15 of them! but im a colonial hunter. willy

I've never heard of one being found here on the left coast; then again, few people were here prior to the Gold Rush of 1849.
