Matteo. It seems that you have found a soldiers ID tags that was killed in action. Just saw that on the website. I found this website and his name and serial number match the website. I will try and dig deeper my friend.

At the bottom of the page is where his name is listed.

http://genealogytrails.com/penn/washington/military/WWII_casualties.htm

I bet his family would love to know you found those.

Possible air-gauge?
Hope you can track down the owner, or at least the children of the dog tag.
Very personal item.

Its for measuring distances on a map. You roll it with the small wheel (missing here) over the map and can read the distance on the dial.
Carefully look for more personal things at the spot You found the dogtag.

I know... but first Matteo has to go over and look for everything else that could be there. I would do some research on the name, maybe You guys over there could help with that! Locate the family, but not contact them before everything is proof. This could be a find of a lifetime.

Folks, I have already found a relative of this Soldier. He stated John J Vegso was his dad's uncle or brother do not remember which he said and the other name on the tag Marion Vegso was his sister who died in the 50's or 60's he had another sister that died about 8 yr's ago as well. I have not told him who has found the dog tag but would try to find out if the finder would let family have it. I use to be a Private Investigator for 15 yr's now retired from it so I felt I could find the family. Anyway it would be great if I could put you in touch with the family and you let them have the dog tag but you found it that is up to you.

I have been Pm'ing back and forth with Matteo this morning. Banner find if you ask me. If you all notice the date PFC Vegso passed away..September 15th, 1943.. ID tags were found on September 17th, 2010..

67 years and 2 days after his death his ID tags were found. That is why I said earlier this should be a banner find. Almost found on the same day he died in 1943...WOW..

Awesome Find Matteo La Boccia! Congrats..

since the grave is in italy - thus family can not visit him easily * -- would be nice to send dog tag to family --of course, get a copy made for you * to keep for your collection --a photo of where it was found and a photo of his grave site in italy would be nice to go with the "dog tag"--might mean a lot to his family
