I wouldn't hunt without them (unless they broke or I forgot them). Saves batteries, lets you hear more, keeps you focused and it doesn't broadcast to the whole area what you're doing.

It makes a huge difference.
1. extends battery life
2. can hear the tone more clearly

Those are the two things that make a difference if u get head phones! :)

Never leave home without them! They help cut out the background noise of passing cars and wind and such.
Hey! I never knew they saved on the batteries too! Cool!

Yes, Please and I say Please use a good set of headphones.
I mean the ones you can adjust both sides. You can buy them at
your local detector dealer. I always wear them when ever I hunt.
I also always keep a spare pair in the car with me, you never know
when you will break a wire or something else.

You said you haven't found much in the way of old things. I just went to
Google and typed in you home town and looked for 1860 county maps
for Piedmont NC. Found a site called Cyndi's list. Wow, you need to look
at this site. Lots of places to check out. Those old maps will help also.
Be sure to always get permission where ever you hunt. Also write down the
name of the person who gave you permission.

Hope this helps out, HH, Ringfinder

yes we had a big Revolutionary War battle here, but you can't get anywhere close, or you will be arrested. the city
has developed most of the land around where it took place.....there still may be some stuff to be found in free to detect areas.........but i'm not looking for that far back stuff......or thats what i tell people.....

Hi mwsvector.

Like everyone has written, yes buy headphones. You can start with the lower cost phones sold on ebay. I bought the "Treasure Wise" cheapos off ebay and love them. I planned to get expensive phones but I'm holding off because these work so well. With shipping they were like $21.

It's a good idea to make sure the phones you buy are recommended for your detector.

Another thing that helps for finding the really old stuff is the hunt very slowly and set your discrimination just above iron. Dig any questionable signals.

If you use a metered detector, watch for those weaker signals that bounce back and forth from good to bad.

Best to you.

I use light headphhones in the summer, and heavy ones in winter...
The heavy ones I use at the beach because the surf can sometimes
be quite noisy...
Without headphones you will find shallow targets mostly... :)
