By etched, you mean it's scratched into the surface? If it's not, and looks more like it's due to a chemical exposure. Then it might have to do with the 1800's tin type pictures. That's just a guess though.
Fairly sure it's not him, but it kind of looks like Russia's Stalin.

Yes, from early photography, I think this is why some old pictures look like they have a ghost in them, it is just from other pictures on that plate that still had old pictures on them...Just heard of that and made me think of it!

rvbvetter,scratched onto the surface.
nahabit made from copper,i mentioned brass but i was wrong.
trk5capt i would say that it looks like you could be right.
gypsyheart i found it by a river landing.

The image looks like one of the first premiers of my state,which is West Australia. I have sent of a email with photo enclosed to the museum perhaps they know something.

Maybe a Ferrotype or a calotype or a Dauguerreotype. Looks like from Fox Talbots time around 1830 to 1839. Since it looks like a negative tintype is my guess.
