1824 General Lafayette Wax Seal Commemorating His Return to New York

Kirk, Chris, and I went back to the same site that we hit last Sunday. I dug the 1788 Connecticut copper that was struck over a Nova Constellatio there. Chris dug a VA halfpenny, 1796 large cent, and a Coronet cent. Kirk dug the 1844 political medal there as well.

I decided to snap some other pictures of the site. Here is a pic that I call "Looking out into the Pennsylvania frontier."



Here is another view of the surrounding land from where the home sat. This early settler sure had a beautiful view.



Once again, just like last Sunday, within the first 10 minutes of swinging, I got an iffy nickel reading. After I flipped the dirt out, it was still in the hole and reading in the high penny range. I was thrilled when I saw what it was: a 1754 King George II farthing. It is our second farthing this year as a group.





I also found this interesting wax seal. I can't make out what the letters say surrounding the bust of the man. If anyone knows who it is, I would greatly appreciate the needed information!

You had another great Colonial day, brother. I am thinking that wax seal looks early-19th century. I wish you would show a better size representation of the Farthing. What a special site this has turned out to be. The coppers are KKC material and the relics unique. We could not ask for a better Colonial digging site. Rack and stack a new one next week!

You never let us down and today was no different. Great finds brotha. I see your photography skills are picking up too. Beautiful countryside. I've never been to PA and didn't realize it was hilly like that.
Hopefully you get an ID on the interesting wax seal.

and "NEW YORK" below him?

I also am seeing a "17" and the year "1824" after a search on Lafayette (if it's even him) he came back to the states for a visit in 1824-25 (landed in staten island ny) and on Oct 17 1824, visited Mount Vernon and George Washington's tomb

Jeff, I have been scrutinizing the wax seal. It does look like "New York". The number "17". I also think it says "1824". I am going to have to stamp it in putty to see what I can see.

word to the left of his bust is "LANDED" so it's commemorating him landing in Staten Island, NY in 1824

"LA FAYETTE LANDED AT NEW YORK 17 (next word might be August?) 1824" with the bust of Lafayette .. pretty definitive.. congrats again, one of the cooler finds of 2010 by anyone

There is no doubt that is a commemorative to La Fayette dating to 1824. I dug a LaFayatte button which is a one piece but a seal blows a button away. It is a rare find you made, I have never even heard of a LaFayette seal.!!
