Great Find Scott!! I've found 2 of them and you never tire of finding those plates. Many Union Soldiers did not like to wear them as the gold gilted breastplate made a real nice target for the Rebels to shoot at. We find them in CSA camps too where the rebels stripped the breastplate and U.S. Box plates from captured leather cartridge boxes and used the leather. WTG, Quindy

I think that is very true after the reality of war set in.. my theory is once they marched and marched... and marched.. they started tossing extra weight! So the breast plate was really the first frisbee! I can picture some private on picket duty.. feet killing him.. dumping 20 - 40 three ringers and tossing that breast plate as far as he could throw it! I've dug "pockets" of three ringers 20+ in a hole a few too many times over the years I just think they were not all spills.. I dug one that was 18 or so, all nose down and in a circle.. really leads me to believe that they were discarded on purpose.

NOT that I ever dumped weight form an ALICE pack out in the field ;D ;D
