We had these here when I was a kid, 40's, 50's. I think they were gone from circulation by the mid 50's. We had a fractional sales tax system and different colored tokens had different values. I remember the silver one but there were also several different plastic colors also. HTH's ,

I found a tax token from Colorado....here in Indiana.

Here's what my research found and I'm sure it applies to yours:

Colorado used sales-tax tokens from Sept. 1, 1935,to Feb. 28, 1945, according to the American Numismatic Association. The tokens were used when Colorado established a sales tax of 2 percent and had to figure out how that would be paid in amounts less than 1 cent. Sales of 5 cents or less had no tax, 6 to 14 cents had one token, 15 to 24 cents two tokens, etc. Sales tax on 45 to 50 cents was a penny. The tokens were issued in huge numbers, first in aluminum and then plastic.

Good Find!

Cool token. I have never found any but I may not be where they were used. A find a day keeps the boredom away :coffee2:

Re: Washington Tax Token, on onliner reports:
First produced in 1935, sales tax tokens were used to make change for sales tax paid. Washington State was one of only 12 states to employ this practice. After a few years, both retailers and the public found their use to be too much trouble, and they were discontinued. The diameter of this token is about 7/8", with a hole in the center. One side reads, "Tax Commission State of Washington Tax Token". The other side reads, "Tax on Purchases, 10 Cents or Less", and in very small print, "ch.180 laws 1935".
Don.....

I am so glad I didn't have to start a new thread.

I am the proud digger of one of these bad boys.

It was found in my back yard. I am an avid detector/hunter, and am clearing the brush in my back 1/2 acre, for fire wood, and to detect it better. I was getting the chickens in on the good bugs, and low and behold, Raven, my black bird, uncovers one of these tax tokens. AWESOME!

I like the post about how these are common, and annoying. Its my oldest metal disc ( not a coin ), and I will show it off proudly.
