Wow!

Maybe a British Charles I halfgroat?

CHARLES IN CHARGE Image 2

Question 2I dug this coin at an Indian Wars site in Kansas. It is silver, about dime size, and very thin. If possible, please tell me where it is from, how old it is, what the writing on it means, and what it is worth.

Answer 2 It's a 17th century British halfgroat of Charles I,probably just about the last thing you'd expect to turn up at such a location. The obverse bears a bust of the king facing left, with the Roman numeral II behind, signifying the value of the coin, twopence. Above the king's crown is the tun (barrel) mintmark used by the Tower Mint in London in 1636-38. The surrounding inscription, which appears to be CAROLVS D. G. M: B: D: ET H: REX, is an abbreviation of Carolus Dei Gratia Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex, Latin for, "Charles, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland." On the reverse is a crowned shield, the royal arms, and the Latin motto IVSTITIA THRONUM FIRMAT, or "Justice strengthens the throne." If the coin were unholed and in Very Good condition, it might retail for $50 or more. Obviously, it's lost much of its numismatic value, but as a relic it's definitely a dandy!

Looks like a cast modern reproduction. (Look at the melted metal, this should be a hammered coin) Just in general I think it looks like a fake coin so would be very surprised if it was real. (actually I would probably never believe it)

In what way :icon_scratch: there are quite a few on the UKFD, nearly all are different in some ways, struck by different dies..as is the same with most Hammered coinage, you only get the same, from one's that have been struck from the same dies :icon_thumleft:

well the inner circle thats under the lettering there should be a circle of little dots on both sides which this one hasn't not even got any sign of them as you can't say its wear as the lettering is still readable and the dots that should be there are right next to them :icon_scratch:

[/quote]I'm afraid that's not correct, there are several enteries for the coinage without inner circles, 2834 in spinks, Aberystwyth bust types, 3a4-5, no inner circles, or on reverse only.

2835,....3a6, no inner circles..mm..Anchor.

I didn't realise how many varieties there were until SS mentioned it, thanks mate :icon_thumleft:. Here are just a few without the inner circle of dots, there are many more on the UKDFD. I don't know if it's real or not, a hands on examination would be needed, but I would be happy with it.
