1830's to 1840's Two Piece USMC Button and 200 year old Tombac with Thread!

Back to the field again for another 5.5 buttons today. (One was a half button.) Most were nothing special but I was pleased to find an early two piece USMC button. This style button was the first the two piece buttons issued for the Marines, used in the 1830's & 1840's. I cleaned it up a bit, but it still needs a bit more toothpicking. I don't recall finding any two piece buttons at this site before, which is odd due to the fact that I have now found well over 200 buttons at the site.

The tombac is interesting because it has a heavy hemp thread through the shank. Is there some way to preserve it like this? I found one with a thin thread a few years back but I noticed recently that the thread is no longer on that one.

A tiny drop of cynocrilate glue on both sides. It would remain forever.

No problem. Just make sure the thread is dry so it wicks up the glue. Mind you, a tiny drop, you put a big drop and it will run all over the button, won't hurt the button but also won't look very nice.
