Very interesting, nice finds......was the Large Cent on it's way to becoming a coin ring? :dontknow:

HH all!

Greg
Seems like the attempt of making the ring failed when it cracked , then "whoever", tossed it or lost it :icon_scratch: Thanks for the comment 1235ce..I was getting a feeling this post was less than comment worthy or boring to viewers :-\ Thanks at least it grabbed someones interest

Well it still counts as a copper.... at least it has some detail unlike some smooth discs. :icon_thumright: And it will look good in your display! No doubt that it will become a conversation piece. :)

Nope! It's definately "post worthy". I don't know about others, but with the New Year's week-end, I've been busy.

I still have fond memories of a walking liberty half I found about 35 years ago. It had been "spooned" into a ring. The center was cut out and I could still see enough of the lettering to know what it was. It had cracked at that point, (still rough,) and whomever had tossed it on the ground.

A find like yours would make my whole year. :laughing7: Congratulations on a classic find!!!

Thanks Quindy , same one is giving up stuff in the grown up areas that no one thought possible to search .. tough briers and thorns but the cold has beat them down this time of the year . NOT easy pickings but there are still quite a few goodies left .....fun, ;D I have my head phones snagged and pulled off , daily .I am using pruning shears now ! Best to you and your Family for 2011

Re: 1780's Grist Mill , First 2011 Extra large Cent

Nice post to start off the new year! I am not so sure of it being on its way to becoming a ring. It could have been anything. Sometime after the introduction of the small cent in 1859, old large cents were used for many different purposes. I have seen them used as coat check tags, and even cogs! It is possible that this was an old cent that was on its way to nearly any imaginable purpose.

Nice find! Classic Heads are somthing you don't see posted often.

Unique copper , if I may say so !! Found others with less rim spooning but never saw one worked this hard and discarded :dontknow: Glad it is getting some attention and input on a purpose other than a coin is always appreciated  Thanks Neil

:D Thanks Mainerelic Some call it junk ..some see the history .Take for instance the ox shoe , :sign13: today it's a John Deere tractor or a Mack truck , back then it was an ox or a team of oxen or horses ... no chain saws ...axes . Oxen can pull heavier loads, and pull for a longer period of time than horses. On the other hand, they are also slower than horses, which has both advantages and disadvantages; their pulling style is steadier, but they cannot cover as much ground in a given period of time. For agricultural purposes, oxen were more suitable for heavy tasks such as breaking sod or ploughing in wet, heavy, or clayey, soil. When hauling freight, oxen could move very heavy loads in a slow and steady fashion. They are at a disadvantage compared to horses when it is necessary to pull a plow or load of freight relatively quickly.

These relics are worth preserving , I donate them to the local historians , here is a pic of a dawg restored colonial bridle .

I would still call it a copper ! The Classic Head Cent series were made on inferior or "junk" planchets. This is why they are so hard to find in higher grades. Maybe the "junk" planchet is why it cracked :dontknow: They should have used a Draped Bust ;D
