Hadrian actually ruled from the Netherlands for a period, and Antonius Pius bears a passing resemblence to the bust on this intaglio.
Below from 'Radio Netherlands worldwide'
In the second century AD, the Netherlands had not one but two important Roman cities. The first was Noviomagus, nowadays known as Nijmegen in the south-east of the country. But research has revealed that Forum Hadriani – near where the town of Voorburg is today (close to The Hague) - was vitally important to the Roman ruler.

Forum Hadriani took its name in the year 121 from the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who had the Germanic settlement completely rebuilt in Roman style. In the year 150, the next emperor, Antonius Pius, gave the settlement town rights. Hadrian even ruled his empire from Forum Hadriani for a short time – which temporarily made it the Roman capital.

great info: :icon_thumleft:

i found it on a cold day in holland ( -4 brrrr) but when i find this great intaglio , i was warm in a minute :D

it was on a field about 40 miles away from Nijmegen.
on that field you can find roman / anglo-saxon / and offcourse moderrn finds

it was found with a minelab-detector ( E-Track)

i dont think it is a emperor , but a important roman man

thanks everybody for the replies :icon_thumleft:

I agree Bubbas...not a Emperor, but some one very important to have a seal like that, a noble Roman of high distinction. We have heard the story :headbang: so lets see it in the right place ...up top :icon_thumleft:

What an awesome find, congrats! Nijmegen is where many soldiers still go today to do an exhaustive long march, I think it has to do with a very old European tradition that belongs to soldiers. HH, Mike

My heart skipped a beat just seeing this you had to sit down and compose yourself after realizing what you found. This made banner and rightly so it was such an important way to authenicate a letter from an important person.

Congratulations on making the Banner! :hello2:

I think Herbie is onto something here with the notion that this gold ingot bears a remarkable resemblance to Antonius Pius. :icon_thumright:

Cheers,
Dave
