Found a Civil War Soldier's Sweetheart Ring!!
Hello all,
My hunting buddy and I went back to Gen. Sherman's September 1861 camp to try and find some more CW lead and buttons. Hunting started out slow with my buddy only finding a melted Minie Ball. Finds were sparse for me as well, so I decided to head to a part of the field that had not been hunted much. I'm glad I did, because within minutes I got a strong signal on my Tejon that I figured was a bullet or shotgun shell base and, to my surprise, out popped this awesome soldier's sweetheart ring . I have never found anything quite like this before. I can only imagine how hurt this soldier probably was after having lost his ring. It's an amazing feeling to hold something in your hand that was last held by someone who was fighting in one of the bloodiest conflicts this country has ever seen. Much of the gold still remains on this ring, and it is heavily engraved on the sides. It even has two hearts engraved in it, one on either side. Unfortunately the stone is missing . Even so, this ring is one of the best things I have ever found because it has a story to tell that is nearly 150 years old.
Anyway, the only other things I found today were a .69 cal round ball and three buckshot balls. My buddy found one dropped 3-ringer, two shot 3-ringers, and three dropped .69 round balls. Another successful day's hunt at Sherman's camp.
Thanks for looking and HH!
