Re: 1 PEICE EAGLE "FINE ORANGE GILT " BACKMARK

I just searched Bazelon's button makers and dealers. The only "fine orange Gilt" back mark (quality mark) is on page 35

"Fine Orange Gilt/*J.E* " C. 1820

I'll keep searching

i didnt think that eagles were that early? There is a mention in TICES for a "orange treble gilt" about the same time frame!

Re: 1 PEICE EAGLE "FINE ORANGE GILT " BACKMARK

This is one of the Orange-type Backmarks off the Early Artillery Button I found during the summer and one of the only ones I find on Military Buttons but I must say, I dug probably near 100 Early 1 and 2 piece Eagle "A's" this past year but don't remember any having the "Fine Orange Gilt" bacmark. Very interesting indeed...

Yes, its definitely one of the early style Eagles, they used the one piece Eagle "A's" alot in the *1830s-1840s and then the 2 piece buttons started proliferating in the 1840s-1850s

*typo above, actually meant to type "1820" not "1830"

Re: 1 PEICE EAGLE "FINE ORANGE GILT " BACKMARK

those "quailty" type back markings ---- quality "puffing"- lettering on the rear ( mostly english but american as well)- were use to tout how much better your button was over others * --- double gilt , trible gilt . and so on -- the 1 piece type buttons are normal thought of as 1820 to 30 era normally -- as in the 1840's two piece buttons became more popular -- but the 1 piece buttons still were made but just not as much.

very nice find * --there are exsamples of 1830 era seminole war buttons with eagles --yours might have been on a seminole war vets uniform --that went home on leave or took his uniform home after service .

Re: 1 PEICE EAGLE "FINE ORANGE GILT " BACKMARK

Congrats on the rare button in great shape!
I love the early 1 pieces :hello2:
i've been trying to track that backmark, no luck here either.
does it say Fin* or Fine?
I've found several abbreviations/misspellings on other buttons,
especially concerning phila/fila/fil/phil :tongue3:
it looks as if a third star would line up here also,
Great Find
