OUT DIGGING

[SHERMANVILLE ILLINOIS]

Out to a old farm area today, that I have visited
in the past. Farmer had several fields separated
by tree lines. Area I am working had a creek at one
time, goes down about 5 feet from main level, but has
only been damp whenever I visited. Not sure, but have
a feeling that a canal project that was built may have
changed the layout of the land and this creek bed serves
no purpose now.

So far have dated the dump 1920's -1930's.
Did this with a Lionel part that I found. Posted

Weeds and grass crossing the fields were anywhere
from waist to shoulder height and made it difficult.

First photo is dig site. Main hole and a second
hole at top right.
2nd, finds in the field.
3rd, battery parts and jar covers
4th, metal items.
(have no positive id's yet)
5th, Only bottle I found, cork, would think around
late 30's, or in the 40's. 2 1/2 ft down.
The glass stopper was in the same hole
but I do not think they go together.
Clock parts, spoon; the item on the left
may be a metal tag off of something, will
see if I can clean it up for id.
Shards all over the place from early 1900"s
but have not dug a good one.
6th Crock shard, Western Stoneware. Took it
trying to date area again, but no help yet.
Company is still in business in Illinois, will
see if any way I can date it.

Did a lot of digging today and did not come up
with the bottles I was looking for.

Interesting finds sherm. Western pottery actually went out of business. I think there last day was a week or two ago. They were located in Monmouth Illinois.

cool stuff sherm! just remember to load up on the deepwoods off when you trudge through that thick brush. a tiny little deer tick can really ruin your day anymore . nice digs!

found their web site. Story of my life; I
dig a shard that has been in the ground
for at least 50 years and need some
hope of dating it, the company goes
out of business last week.

Hollow,
area is loaded with deer.

Do not feel real comfortable using
chemicals on my skin.

Take a good shower whenever I
get in; check myself out good.
