I suspect this area was the target range dating from 1865 - 1890. I found the bullets in an area about 100' X 100'. The brass about around 200 yards away. Could only spend abut three hours at the site as it was one of those 'warm' Arizona days!

One of the shell casings reads as follows:

An 'R' at the top
An 'F' at the bottom
A '6' on the left side
A '83' on the right side

I assume this means it's from 06/1883 ? Any help identifying would be appreciate as I know nothing about this subject, (yet).

Thanks for looking

A friend here at work sez the one bullet, (top left), is an 50-58 mini ball from the Civil War era.

Sounds like you found an firing range. One of the skills in the military is to hit targets at 75,150,200 and 300 yds away. That would explain casings at one end and the bullets at the other.

the rest of the bullets and cases look like 45/70. these were used in the trapdoor rifles used by the military from 1873 up through the spanish/american war.

pegleglooker Yep, that's what I was thinking as well. Going back this weekend - will try and take some pics of the area.

flip thanks for the feedback - my limited research suggested to me that they were 45-70's as well.
