Viking Age Sword Amulet !

This very little find is definately one of my very best.
It is a viking age sword amulet / talisman found at a viking age trading place.
The amulet is only 3 cm (1.18 inches) long and a very rare find.

It is nicely ornamented and on the back it has a small eye so that it could be carried.
I am not exactly sure of the dating of the amulet, but it would be from the period between 750 and 950 AD.

The amulet was found at a viking age site that I discovered in the spring of 2008.
The place has given me and my detector collegue many, many finds since then.
The total of finds, counting all the small pieces too, would be running up to a thousand till today.

How long does it take once you turn it in to be paid and do they sometimes give it back to you after examining it?

Unfortunately the local museums are these years short of money and time, so it can take very long time.
The procedure is so that the finds are delivered to the lokal archaeological museum and preserved, examined and registered.
(Thats what takes a loooong time).
Then they are delivered to the National Museum in Copenhagen, who set the finders fee and pay it out for you directly to your bank account. Additionally you get a very fine letter from the museums director, who writes about the find and the archaeological context of the find.
I have finds at the local museum that have now been waiting to go to Copenhagen since august and december 2009.
That is absolutely to long time, but I can´t do anything about it.
Finds (not coins) are very often delivered back for exibition at the local museums.
Coins are collected in a national collection of coins also used for numismatic research.
If finds are exeptional they will often stay at the national museum in Copenhagen and be a part of their exibition.
Due to this special "law" in Denmark we have in the National Museum one of the best collections of antiquity in the world.
