The Afternoon was perfect for an after work hunt so back into what I consider my homesite. The city woods. Three blocks from my house . This past Saturday I came across a patch of deep Iron so I headed there today and really took my time swinging in and around it . It sure paid off . The Pewter cap or pole end ?? Was the first deep non ferrous signal I managed to pick out. It didn't seem long before I had another deep repeatable and at at least 8 inches down I finally pop out a largie ! ; I had an inkling it was not a coronet it just seemed a little too thick . Turned out to be my first Liberty Cap cent. It looks to be the 1795 head in low relief variety . It is not in very good shape but I will take It with a smile . Next came a lead seal , a couple small buckles in the same hole , a spoon piece and then a big signal and out comes the ornate brass egg holder mount ?? I am going to post it in what is it . A little while later I was holding What I thought was a flattened eagle button . Upon cleanup I was very surprised to see it was a PORTLAND RAILROAD button. I had never heard of the Portland railroad before and my initial search only turned up the Portland & Boston raliroad and the Portland, Saco and Portsmouth railroad , but after posting it in what is it Gypsyheart found it in the Maine historical society website . Portland railroad was the name of the street car system in the city which was operating as early as 1890. Thanks for looking MaineRelic
