The Afternoon was perfect for an after work hunt so back into what I consider my homesite. The city woods. Three blocks from my house . This past Saturday I came across a patch of deep Iron so I headed there today and really took my time swinging in and around it . It sure paid off . The Pewter cap or pole end ?? Was the first deep non ferrous signal I managed to pick out. It didn't seem long before I had another deep repeatable and at at least 8 inches down I finally pop out a largie ! ;D ; I had an inkling it was not a coronet it just seemed a little too thick . Turned out to be my first Liberty Cap cent. It looks to be the 1795 head in low relief variety . It is not in very good shape but I will take It with a smile ;D. Next came a lead seal , a couple small buckles in the same hole , a spoon piece and then a big signal and out comes the ornate brass egg holder mount ?? I am going to post it in what is it . A little while later I was holding What I thought was a flattened eagle button . Upon cleanup I was very surprised to see it was a PORTLAND RAILROAD button. I had never heard of the Portland railroad before and my initial search only turned up the Portland & Boston raliroad and the Portland, Saco and Portsmouth railroad , but after posting it in what is it Gypsyheart found it in the Maine historical society website . Portland railroad was the name of the street car system in the city which was operating as early as 1890. Thanks for looking MaineRelic

Nice story, site, and Colonial recoveries there MR!!! I don't recall one of those egg holders being dug in a good while on Tnet but I may have missed it. That place certainly merits a return trip. HH, Quindy.

Being a collector of local railroad stuff the button is my favorite. My collection is mainly lanterns and I have Boston & Maine, Boston & Albany, NY Central, Maine Central, as well as a few others. Also have a round B&M marked kerosene can that was used to fill the lanterns. What started my whole collection though was a huge hand forged wrench stamped with C, M & L RR that I found in my barn. Research showed that it was for the Concord, Manchester & Lawrence Railroad which was only in operation for a handfull of years before being gobbled up by the B&M. My favitore website for railroad ID is this one. You may already know about it but it's worth repeating. http://www.railroadiana.org/
