1700 William III Pewter Spoon & pieces from 3 others!

Thought this find deserved a post of it's own.
have found many pieces of old pewter flatware at Cob Cove,
was always intrigued by the similarity of some of the pieces,
Well, when I found a mostly intact spoon with a Bust and script I was hoping I'd be able to get some info about them.
It is a King William III Pewter Spoon, made in Boston Ma, CA 1700.
Have handles and bowls from 3 others previously dug from the vicinity.
Note bust images on all 4 handles

Very interesting link below about these spoons history and someone purchasing an original mold and making new spoons! (I contacted him, his do not have the 'A1'
on the back of the handle)
Why did I spend all this time digging these when I could purchase a shiny new one for $20

This must've been one amazing spoon when it was made 300+ years ago!

I bet the person who lost it cried when they found it was missing! :'(

Hi Dave,
What I think happened is that the waterfront inn that was operating there at the time used these spoons, and as they broke, they were discarded out the window.
There is still a building on the original foundation that comes out over the water on pilings.

I just added that spoon to my wish list Herbie. We find a few pewter buttons in CS camps and some melted pieces where soldiers threw pewter items into campfires. You just never know what to expect when you go hunting there Herbie. HH, Quindy.

No doubt a early spoon & frags with the rat tail on the back of the bowl.Looks like you've done your home work on it though so I won't have to go dig Info out.

I've found quite a few old pewter spoon parts & to have one with that much design still left or any design at all is a Fantastic find!But hey what can I say I'm a spoon man myself. :laughing7:

I'm seeing the bust on the 3 other handle fragments also.
looks like one may have a slightly different 'Dognose' but I think all of these are William IIIs.

Those are some great early colonial artifacts!

I just love early pewter cutlery, and yours are some great examples. I'd love to find some with the markings that yours have. Below are some pics of a few pieces of early cutlery I've been fortunate to dig around southeast VA, and nearly all of them came from my favorite creekfront site. Not sure how early these date to, but I'm guessing early-to-mid 1700s. The site goes back to the mid-1600s. Thanks for posting your great looking spoons.

Did you straighten that handle, or are they different spoons?
This metal is usually extremely brittle.
The 'Dognose' style handle (your intact spoon) is from around 1700,
the 'Fiddle' shapes became popular later.

Thanks for that urethane advice, I went through my collection of foldered 'Good' finds the other day and was sorely dissappointed at the deterioration of some items.

I found an O.S.V. pewter spoon that is identical to the one in your last photo. I bought a box of miscellaneous old silverware that wasn't wanted because it wasn't solid sterling silverware. I just felt this one was too unique to pass by. Love it! My daughter loves Celtic marked unique items and so I knew that even if it had little worth she would like it possibly. I really wanted to find out about it as it was unique. Thank you for posting your finds. It was one of few I could find about possible history.
