When to a civil war camp in my area that I was told not to bother to go to because it was hunted out. WRONG. Place is full of targets, a lot of trash but I know there's more in there. I was only there about 5 minutes and pulled out this minnie-ball. It's the first item I've dug up here that I can directly relate to the Civil War. If anyone can tell me the caliber or any info on it, that would be great. The same guy who told me not to metal detect there also told me not to detect another spot in the area. I went over there and pulled out a few buttons and a 1777 half reale. It's beat, but I'ts mine and I love it. Also got a two cent pocket spill but I can't seem to find the other. It was right next tot he hop along cassidy gun which is apparently quite rare. 83' shield nickel, couple buffalo nickels and a few wheaties. Got some what is its in there. Been a good couple of days after driving three hours to get skunked this past weekend. There's a locket in there, not sure on the date, but you can't tell from the pics, there is human hair in there.

Nice finds  That last one is either a weight or the biggest dang button I've ever seen.

HH Charlie

Haha, that was my thought exactly. Found it in the woods off one of the islands off Boston harbor.

WHAT IS THIS STUFF???

The hooked item is a Hoof pick, used to clean out a horses hoof around the "frog" the rounded item with two tines is a jaw harp (doing doing doing) sound. If you found these items around the civil war camp site
I would say that is typical as soldiers often played this jaw harp and harmonica for music. The hoof pick is common as so many horses and mules were needed to haul things around plus officers mounts.

Not sure what the other stuff is but interesting.

Nice finds.

Nice Finds. Yes the one piece is a Jews harp.(like the pic below some I found) The checker board button can't see the back but could date back to the reale era late 1700's.That weight is just that a weight for a duck decory I find lots of them around the water.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Very nice finds! Great variety of items. In the third picture, the one showing all your finds, the brass item to the right of the Stanley rule is a flag or guidon staff base. We have found these in Civil War cavalry camps. The hole is the side is caused from rubbing against the saddle. James

Great assortment of finds. I found the exact hoof pick a few weeks ago. Though, I didn't know what it was until Floodcitykid just ID'd yours. I thought it was a skate lace tightener!!!

No spot is ever hunted out, and if someone tells you not to waste your time at a spot, then charge the batteries and get to it !!!

Congrats on a great hunt and good luck with your next one...

Brian

Thanks for the replies and id's. I would never have guessed that was a duck decoy weight considering where I found it. I did sell the ring today. Got 200.00, just enough to get my new 15x12" coil!! :headbang:

I know the feeling. I still have a bunch of common coins I haven't found yet. I've only found one silver quarter, one V nickel and one Barber dime. Luck I guess.

Hunted out???? Make sure you tell that guy he was right :laughing9:

I actually can't wait to see him again. The past part about it all was he had recently found a pine tree shilling. I asked, "what kind of spot did you find it at." He proceeded to tell me about it not realizing he gave the location away :D :D Needless to say, I know where I will be next week.
