I'm still saying it's a Civil War Button but most likely made in the 1830s......

Button depicts eagle facing right with "A" in the shield, generally for artillery officers. Backmark: "ROBINSONS / (dot) (star) (dot) EXTRA (dot) (star) (dot) " rm, between one upper raised ring and two lower, concave back on one piece button, only used for cadet coat or vest size, ca 1830's 1840's, (RobinsonRW25). One part convex button, coat size. Nondug button, gilded, stand up shank.

this is just MY opinion. That button is STELLAR as is. I would do nothing to it. I would put it somewhere safe and when you get a few more put them in a display frame or case.

But again this is just my opinion.

No way, that button shows so much character in its dug condition.. not to mention, it's the best dug example of a pre-CW eagle A I've ever seen (out of several hundred I've seen dug or dug myself)

Eagle button. Looks Civil War to me. A lot of folks use scrubbing bubbles (judiciously) to clean these up. I've used a 50/50 lemon juice/water solution that also works well. Let it soak for 10-20 seconds at a time then gently brush with a soft tooth brush. Someone here gave me that advice and it worked well for me. Nice find.

I don't even bother cutting the lemon juice, 10 minutes will sort it. (rinse with water after)

I agree what's to clean most of the guilding is still there, some has gone...you can't bring that back the back might clean up a bit

Like Jeff and a few others said it is a pre-civil war artillery button. That style, the eagle with an "A" on his shield, was adopted in 1821. Yours being a one piece button would mean it could date from the 1820's into the 1840s when they switched to two piece buttons. While some older military uniforms were used in the civil war, especially by the Confederates, yours most likely did not see use in the civil war.

Also, as stated above, yours is an excellent specimen. Yours has a clear, strong image while most are lightly struck with faint images. Also it is rare to find them with that much gilt. You have a very nice example there, congratulations
