Maggie and I spent the weekend in North Carolina this past weekend. The weather was perfect, sunny and mild with a warm spring breeze . We went back to visit friends and enjoy the mountains that we really miss. On the way back to Virginia, I asked Maggie if she would like to take a ride through what I call, "the old country" A place where time still stands still. A place where I dug most of my best relics from the 1700 and 1800's. I stopped by to see an old a farmer friend and we kicked the dirt and talked of what he referred to as the good ole days. He spoke of a story of General Cornwallis and some of his troops that hid in a nearby cave prior to a well documented battle. He talked how the city folks were moving in the area, and what his concerns about that. He spoke about plowing and planting some areas of the property, and I asked when they might plow some of my favorite fields. He paused, then answered with excitement, "Oh! you need to go over on the next road, we are doing a deep plow on some new ground" After a nice visit, Maggie and Sammie jumped in the Ford pickup and we were off through the woods. I arrived at the spot my friend spoke of, and I asked Maggie if she would mind if I tried detecting for a few. I can do a very quick scan in these fields to see if there might be something worth working slowly for. She obliged, and I got my gear on and headed towards a likely spot in the field, where I would live if I had to. Almost immediately, my hunch was right. Telltale signs of old pottery, glass and iron strewn on top of the warm red clay. I did a basic noise cancel on the well used Minelab etrac and began to methodically scan the ground with a quick pace . It wasn't but a few seconds when I got my first good tone. A early 1800's button. I worked the ground for and hour or so picking miscellaneous copper and brass targets. Everything was in great shape, never seeing any fertilizer, and most of my copper buttons had clear London back marks. My favorite find of the hunt was a very nice Tombac flower button. I will be heading back this week to see if I can find some Revolutionary War relics.
