Well, he's pretty sharp if he can determine the age of someone who lost something by looking at a couple photos, don'tcha think?

You are dense my friend

From your title, I was expecting a newborn child, or a marriage photo.
Glad I was wrong!
Very unexpected find!

I dont think it was a kill shot..Whatever it was close :o

Did they wear these helmets when they were flying :dontknow:

The fact it was found in the US isnt a good sign for the German soldier :-\

The story this helmet could tell..The story all our old finds could tell :read2:

These helmets were for ground troops, the Luftwaffe just like our modern Air Force had many ground troops, and even front line combat divisions. I also agree, that hole looks more like a shrapnel hit than a bullet, probably made his ears ring, but not necessarily fatal.

Hard to say how long it had been out there, I've seen pics of helmets found in Europe that still have the leather in them after all these years, but the overall condition makes me think not very long. It's a great find, and something I'd love to come across.

wow found outside in such great condition, probably a souvenir, someone showed me a 1916 WW1 leather German helmet that someone took from some poor dead solder, he brought back from the war for a souvenir,

Looks like a mid war M42 helmet to me. Markings are authentic, leather too. The hole in the back seems to be from a splinter. Good find! Keep it, originals become harder to find! :icon_thumleft: especially with markings like that. I wonder a little what things sound good for some people....shooting from behind is not exactly the thing to be proud of...
Hi, I was just wondering if you were referring to the MG42 when you said M42 and also and I say this in humor...I think any fighter/combat pilot (especially during WW2) will tell you that shooting from behind it what 's all about! ;D

a good friend of mine had one that his grandfather (Capt Benjamin 'Opie' Snipas -he passed away this year in Feb) brought back from WW2- I'd suggest being really careful cleaning the leather, as my friends helmet had the owners info inside on that leather band in ink. Opie also came back with two Luger 9mms. Sadly both are long gone now (greed in the family) and one went to the local doctor who saved his life in the 80s.

that is an outstanding find! and it looks like it's in really good condition. hang on to it- someone carried that back from WW2 as a trophy, so it's worth more then most things that turn up around town. great save of history! :notworthy:

Yours is a M35 Helmet. Its the pre war version with folded edge. Looks authentic from what i see. These are two dug helmets from my collection, left is the m42 right is the m35. You can see the foldet edge on the m35. And You can see the much better quality of the pre war helmet. Both were in the ground for about 50 years.

I'm thinking about this, and wondering how far off base I am. Shooting from behind?!?!
This was WWII! I don't think that they commonly met at dawn, walked ten paces, then turned and fired at one another.
This was probably closer to, "Kill, or be killed!"

Probably more of an honorable killing than Mustard Gas. :dontknow:

In the old days like The Revolutionary War,The British not only wanted to win the war,but the manner in which is was won is very important to them..

I also sold the helmet for some good money

Just and update

Amazing find! Looks like it hasn't been outside too long. I would condition the leather and not touch the rest. Congrats and HH, Mike
