A very strange find and maybe my best...

Found this thrown between some rock formations
The rocks kept it out of the weather..
It was the site of a cabin that burned down about 40 years ago..
    Is it authentic
It sure looks like the real thing..How can i tell

Great save. Probably not common find in US. It is original helmet with luftwaffe decal. . It is worth some hundred dollars at least. They know more these in www.wehrmachtawards.com.

Souvenir of the war probably. Note the hole on the back. Bullet hole? Might add to the value.

I was thinking souvenir too. Taken off some dead Nazi by the U.S. soldier that shot him.
Sounds good to me. Nice find

Don't see why it wouldn't be authentic lying out in the woods like that, however the leather looks too good, again lying out in the woods like that. Honestly I don't have a clue. Pretty cool either way

Nice, the leather seems to be period as does the helmet design. Nice Find.

I agree with 'Aquila'; directly under the rivet hole is what appears to be an eagle with spread wings, similar to the original--a pic of a replica is shown here: http://www.german-helmets.com/Stahlh...rke/indexb.htm
The design of the leather webbing is also consistant with images of the original found online.
The condition of the helmet (and leather) could be explained by a more recent deposit--after a period (of years) of the helmet being 'indoors'. I can envision a kid playing with then losing his dad's WW II souvenir.

Looks like a mid war M42 helmet to me. Markings are authentic, leather too. The hole in the back seems to be from a splinter. Good find! Keep it, originals become harder to find! especially with markings like that. I wonder a little what things sound good for some people....shooting from behind is not exactly the thing to be proud of...
