Back Yard detecting - Coin & ????????

I was playing with my MD in the back yard again, this time learning to pin point items on all metal mode.

I finally found something I can take down to the bank and deposit in my bank account... 1cent.
Its my first coin, it was buried a couple of inches down.

And near it I found a metal plate ?? and I also found some kind of gardening tool???
I'm having some big problems getting the dirt off the items, the dirt is basically caked on and will not coming off even if I try to scrap it off, at the moment its soaking in water with bicarb soda.

This is the plate found near the coin.
If you look closely the only metal bit you can see is a dark line in the middle of the item.

Get the hammer out, Tommi, to knock off the rust. Then use a wire wheel on a grinder. Then spray the items with Loctite Extend rust neutralizer. Have to use a couple of coats.

These are tips from Comfy in Vermont, by the way on cleaning crusty rustys. ;)

Neat coins, tommi.

Your first coin looks like a Lawnmower Coin, which is especially neat. I keep all my lawnmower pennies.

I prefer electrolysis to get the caked rust off. You just have to expose some bare iron to make electrical contact, then you're all set. There are some good instructions elsewhere on the forum if you've never tried it before.

Re: Back Yard detecting - Coin & ????????

Thanks for the kind words :)

I tried electrolysis but nothing much happened, I believe I was using to many amps as my connection started to spark under water lol :o However I'll give it another go.

I'm using dual power supplies for a total of 700mA, makes a lot of bubbles and noise, I used it to clean up my bell that you see to the left of your screen under my name.

What kind of soil do you have? Looks like it is rough on metal. Burdie

Re: Back Yard detecting - Coin & ????????

Not sure on the soil, come to think of it its a bit strange, I have a nice layer of dark brown thick soil which all the grubs love ... I've pulled out some big fat worms :o when digging down to 30cm's depth (12inches) and then it gets really hard below that maybe thick hard clay, but that's were I'm finding most of my finds in the back yard.
