Colonial Home site gives up Two Largies, 2 Silvers & A Flying Eagle Cent

My hunting buddy and I hit a new colonial homesite in Virginia that we recently received permission to hunt. This home site dates to 1705. We thought we would find alot of civil war stuff, as both sdies frequented this area during the civil war.

I had the best coin date ever and recovered the following with my NEW Fisher F-75 LTD. yesterday, and recovered the following:

1 1857 flying Eagle penny (first for me)
1 1846 Coronet Large Cent
1 1795 Cap Bust Large Cent (my first breaking the 1700 barrier)
1 1911 Barber Dime in Extra Fine Condition
1 1938 Mercury Dime
1 Flat button
1 Zouve round button

HH...

I have tried to take a better close up of the 1795 large cent, however pics never due adequate justice. The 795 are clearly discernable to the naked eye, however the 1 is absent, and unfortunately, retaking a better close up, does not adequately show the date on the coin. Hope this helps....Still for being in the ground for over 2 hundred years, this is my first 1700s era coin with a noticealbe date, and my first ever 1700s area coin.. :headbang:

That's one heck of a 1795. Could be worth a mint. Literally.

You need to proceed with caution and care. I'd suggest the peroxide boil method for cleaning this coin at least.

Put about 1/2 " of hydrogen peroxide into a small dish. Put into a microwave oven, and heat on high for 30-45 seconds. Place coin inside, and allow it to sit for a minute or two. Wash with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Right now I can't tell a date on it. But if you really can see the 1795 date, it could be worth many hundreds of $. Or more.

Please post more posts, or get a friend to take digital photos of the coin after cleaned. This could be one of the big ones.

Looks like an AWESOME day to me!!! :headbang: The safest way to use hyd.per. and water (in my opinion) is to use cold hydo and soak overnight. Check the clarity once in a while and if it gets real cloudy then change it. Then if you rinse use distilled water, pat dry with microfiber cloth and apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly and what detail remains should show up nice.

I've taken a another close up of the pic, and you can clearly see the faint 793 or 795 on the coin. I think it is a 1795, but the last numeral I am not quite sure. Anyone's expeertise welcomed....I believe it is a Liberty Cap Large cent.

Great, great finds!....congrats!! :icon_thumleft:

Unfortunately, I am not very convinced that it's a Liberty Cap large cent (minted 1793-1796) as I can see no indication of the "cap" which is behind the bust......definately a Draped Bust large cent though (minted 1796-1807) and a great find!

Best of luck in your future hunts!

HH all!

18th century draped is a great coin find!
Love the period X marking :o
The busts ribbon often gets worn down to resemble a 'cap'
I got a 1796 Bust that I first thought was a 1795 cap also.
The real cap is in a different position, and almost reaches the edge of the coin.
the bust is also not centralized, but slightly to the right,
The reverse would also have thinner olive leaves rather than 'Deer tracks'
Compare them here: http://www.bestcoin.com/large-cents.htm
Again, Congrats on a great early US Coppa
