Hey Guys, got out a couple times in the last week and found a few keepers. There's an assortment of stuff as is the norm for this area. I won't waste too much of your

time as I'm getting finished packing tonight to go to Rhode Island to do some diggin' and fishing with some friends of mine. So without further delay here's the pics, thanks

for looking :icon_thumleft:  :

A NICE SURPRISE

Funny enough, I found this Civil War Soldier not long after digging a 3 Ringer:

Carolus III Half-Reale and Double-Shanked Button I thought I had double vision when I pulled this button out, sure enough, two solid shanks on this earlier 1-piece button

Good bunch again. :icon_thumright:

The double lugged item is a leather stud, not a button

Thanks my friend! :icon_thumleft:  I've dug a ton of leather studs over the years but never one with looped shanks like that, do you have a photo of any others like it or know of a website that has them, if so that would be awesome Cru.

Those look similar and I've dug those before but this particulae object doesn't look the same to me, it has fully soldered down loops unlike those leather tacks that are more like nails/spikes for pushing into the leather. I've shown it to my buddy Bill Ladd as well and he concurs. You can clearly see in person.

They are not shanks, just fittings that have been bent over too far. Find lots of them.

Nice article & on page 19 shows them.

Josh,
I pointed out what it was, you asked for links, I spent time finding them, so did Pete and..
(sometimes I wonder why I try & help ID stuff. They don't have to all look the same, there are many variations. I'm sure you have only found a small representative sample)
Why do you think someone went to the extra trouble of putting another shank on a simple round button? (waste of time & money, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it')

The spikes on these often get bent all the way over, had many like it(not the circular but other types, plus every angle in between). Did it happen on purpose or was it over hit, you decide. Was it done by someone that needed a button quickly & that was all he had - maybe. But it doesn't change what it is.

Cru, I appreciate the fact that you AND Pete found those links there's no need to get out of shape as I consider you both good friends. I simply have not seen a leather fastner like this one is all and I've been digging here for about as long as you have over there..that said though, it very well could be a stud but it is DEFINITELY soldered down loops not bent over pointed ends like most all leather studs, look at the second to last photo and you can see it alittle more clearly. I think that you are on to something about it being made into a button.

Thanks Pete, now that I'm on a computer that has adobe I can view it and it does look very similar from the front side. As Cru mentioned above, it might have been someone who made a makeshift button out of it which IS a very good possibility. That would definitely explain it. Thanks for the link my friend!

It could have also been adapted (soldered down) for another function (unknown) as this would give strength if attached to two pieces of cord, like a little junction between :dontknow:
