I found this at 8 inches in a hard packed field. It either fell out of a farmer's pocket or it was buried there intentionally. It is completely intact but I haven't tried to open it yet. Anyone have any ideas as to how to best open this? Also, anyone know if it is old and if so...how old? I don't think that it is silver but I can't be sure.

Re: Pocket Watch at 8 inches

Hey, beautiful find. A real treasure for sure, congrats.

I would bet when you do open it, you'll find a hallamrk on the inside showing it is real gold or silver as it seems to me that another material would have been totally rusted and corroded from being buried so long.

Thanks for sharing the awesome find!

Smiles!

Re: Pocket Watch at 8 inches

Nice find indeed. The case is probably coin silver...90%

It's a key-wind watch....and that dates it to 1870's or 1880's. By 1890 The stem wind watches had replaced the old key wound movements.

Super find. Hope when you open it everything looks just as good as the outside of the watch.

While hold the body of the watch lightly push or pull on the metal loop increasing tension and pressure slightly each time. If there is a release mechanism that is where it should probably be. Very nice find.

That's a real nice one romeo.

Looks to be silver to me.

If it is it still may be in working order.

Let us know if you get it open

Hey! What do we have here :o Wonderful!

Don't screw it up. Take it to some REAL jeweler and have him give you suggestions. I'd proceed very slowly, and make sure that whatever is done, is done right.

That watch is worth a little money. But more than that it's a great artifact find.

Very well done!

That is a very pretty antique watch,CONGRATULATIONS! ;D

I was thinking the same thing as Badger, take it to a jeweler and ask for help on how to open it.
