Hello,

Found this button at an old home site and thought it was a button from the Civil War untill I saw the back. I think it's 1830's - 1840's but I am not sure. Too bad it's in bad condition. I found it literally on top of an old rusty nail.

These old eyes don't see real well but to me it looks like one of those made about 1821. A great many of those had a letter in the shield. For what it's worth I have found those on civil war sites, most generally associated with southern troops. Either way your find is a definite keeper.

Nice early one piece eagle!!
I get a lot of 'A's, with 'United States' backmarks,
Think I got one with a Robinson, believe Duggaps date is correct.
What's the back of yours say?

Id say the rust from the nail leached out and on to your button, great find.

This style of one-piece eagle button is indeed circa 1820's, up through the 1830's. To my knowledge, all of these in fact had a letter in the shield designating the branch of service. Although many are found with wear and ground action that obliterates the details of that particular letter.

My eyes are seeing what appears to be traces of silver plate, which as the case may point, would thereby denote an eagle "I" button from an Infantry uniform of the era. The one-piece eagle "A" buttons were gold gilt, per regulation.
