Re: Almost didn't dig this one

tell us the truth, the band was broken somewhere when you dug it right ?
that is why it came up in the zinc zone on your machine.

If the band is broken on a silver or copper ring it will read lower than normal,

If a band is broken on a gold ring.... ha ha ha you won't pick it up at all.

And you need to try to get a better picture for the rest of us....

Re: Almost didn't dig this one

My wife has a gold ring with a broken band. My F2 can't "see" it at all.

Interesting topic.

That is odd :icon_scratch:
I know that the thin lead ring shaped gaskets I often find sound much louder than an equivalent solid mass.
I have a detector that nulls a Morgan dollar on 'Coin' settings :laughing7:
prodrigsr, i am glad you found your ring ;D

If this broken ring sounds loud and clear, I would be very suspicious of the metal content.

I was digging a good signal on the beach in Spain, years ago, and suddenly the signal
disappeared.... where did it go ???
Well we dig around in the sand a few minutes and suddenly I see a gold band in the sand... (18k)
but my machine can't see it...
so I picked it up to see and I had cut it open with the edge of my shovel.
(I use a regular shovel on the beach)
Tried this several different ways, if it was "Closed" it sounded good like a gold ring, if it was open
it would not sound at all...

Same thing with silver rings... complete they sometimes hit the high 80's on my DFX
broken open they may not reach 60, sometimes as low as the 40s

Conductivity on a complete circuit or ring is much better than on an open ring..

Hmm, I don't remember how 'loud n clear' it rang, but I dug it, and sold it with the rest of my junk gold last month. 10K

Re: Almost didn't dig this one

I,ve been using a CZ5 that I,m still learning so this post is especially of interest to me,will have to do some air tests to see.
On many notch detectors IHPs drop out very close to zinc,so Ive been digging every signal from foil on up.
Kind of defeats the Idea of a discriminator though.I love finding silver.
Gold is the garish light of sun, silver is as the evenings cooling or a gentle rain.

Re: Almost didn't dig this one

Rings that have a thin wide band will split at the bottom when the ground freezes, like pipes do. Narrow bands don't split, probably not enough surface area for the ice to push.

No the ring was not broken, only thing is it was all mashed up. Picture is of my lame attempt to round it up with my mandrel. Pic is too large but is ok, you can clearly see the 925 mark.

todays finds: 2 zinc roofing nails, parts of several broken hotwheels, and 6 zinc pennies.
No silver or gold though

Mont, disc settings are crucial...
I usually search with settings that only reject dead -10 iron, (checking large nulls)
In iron fields I use all metal. factory settings can miss a lot of targets,
Here's a link to the post when I found that cut ring, theory as to why it was cut.
