Hi all The Johnstone Mining Coy started in 1856 when 2 smaller mining claims joined to raise the money required to chase the deep quartz saddle reefs.Johnstone had 4 main shafts on a reef called the Derby. From 1856-1930 365,215 ozs o gold was taken from 800,000 tons of rock crushed. Johnstone shaft No 1 was the deepest at 3400 feet with 25 levels .Had electric battery lights in late 1880's and telephone on 3 levels in 1904. At height of mining 275 men worked the 4 shafts. I been to the site about 5 times and hard rock mines are very junky and slow going. had plenty of rain lately so i have to take what time i can get.

Beautiful piece of Quartz, and some nice silver too :o
I recently learned that what I thought was a foundation is the entrance to an 1860s
gold mine here in NH.
Three mines operated in the state, sending over $50,000 (1860 prices) worth to the Philadelphia mint.
Geologic reports tell of 'Free gold in quartz veins' ;D
I gotta git me some of those :laughing7:
Great Digs, HH to you

I always enjoy reading your posts! :notworthy:

Isn't it funny how similar our 1883 CDN Quarter looks to your 1883 Shilling!

Can you tell me what the age is of this Dog Tag? :icon_scratch:

Cheers,
Dave
