Shaun7's Celtic Gold Field - Day 1...

Unusually for me, the plan to continue the hunt on the No.1 Field changed. I wanted to explore the field that Shaun7 got his Gold Celtic Coin, but as I was wandering I realised that the very wet conditions might make it worth trying over the Gold Spot again. We did this area very quickly whilst being chased by a tractor & on freshly turned soil, so the odds had improved. I was going to grid the area that the Gold was found & then move back to the No.1 Field (next door). Problem was Roman Coins were popping up everywhere & I soon started wishing for a Roman Silver ::)
(9 hours baking :icon_sunny: on my own)

The results shocked me, as I got as many Roman Coins in 1 day, as the whole of last year (from this field) :o
21 Roman Coins
6 Lead Tokens
Royal & Rose Farthing
17th C Token
Large 17th C Button
Crotal Bell - Rings nicely :icon_thumright:
2 Cloth Seals
3 Medieval Leather Mounts
1 bent Tudor Book Clasp
Nice buckle of a type I have never had complete ;D (I think 17th C, but will need to check)
Georgian Coin Weight
Fragment of Roman Silver Ring
Roman Pinhead
Plain Bronze Roman Ring
Military shoulder badge (new type for me)
3 Hammered;
James I 1613 Halfgroat
Henry III cut Half
Edward III Farthing (see other post)

All my holiday, but its still not enough, the list of good looking targets keeps growing, we need to take a few punts on this new land soon. The Wheat is coming in or for some, already in.

I'm guessing you saw the one I got recently :o Took me over 20 years to get one as nice, but the standard ones turn up from time to time, if the hunt the right areas

The key to any successful hunt is to get the coil over the target.

I think you've established that pretty well.

How deep were these finds? If in the 8-10 inch range (12-15cm) you might want to try a larger coil for deeper objects. I'm thinking there's more gold there as well. But I'd happily settle for some of that hammered silver.

Don't you hate when those darn Roman coins get in the way of your plans? Great finds as usual.

On some of our Roman sites, 21 would be an average day, but for this field that is not a Site its a real surprise. About 5 was the norm from this field, which we had chalked up as an OK field but not a high priority one.
(the buckle may look big in the photo but its only 30mm long) :icon_thumright:

Most finds were in the 3-5" range, some deeper. The main issue is target seperation, with many holes having multiple targets. I'm clearing it first with my 11", should really use the 9" but as I clear most signals, the confused ones get sorted anway. The field is not ready yet for my 12 by 15" :icon_thumright: These group of fields take years to clear & we have only just started  Thats why the Hawkers hate us :laughing9: (met one yesterday, asking questions) They have been doing this land for 20 years ::)
