What is happening :o

Returned to the Roman Brooch Field & did a further 6.5 hours, Dad helped for 5.5 hours & actually dug a few coins  Showed a picture of just a small selection of Iron Roman Nails we cleared today.

53 Roman Bronze Coins - Best 1 day total this year.. :)
5 Roman Brooches
Fragment of Roman Ring
Roman Scabbard decorative pieces
Roman Terret Ring (missing the top ring), these were rein guides for Chariots :headbang:
A couple of new types of Roman Coin for the collection
20 AD Cunobelin Bronze Unit - Bull Reverse - Rare (first of this type we have had) Its the not so pretty looking one at the bottom of picture 8 & 9. :icon_thumright:

Plus another find of a lifetime, a near prefect condition Roman Military Sword Chape. I was digging deep at over 12 inches & when I levered the solid clay base, a lump popped & flipped over & I took a picture before I picked it up. At this stage I thought I had a very nice Roman Mount, but when I pulled it out & saw the slot, I then was pretty much clueless. I had never seen anything like it, anywhere.

Turns out its a very rare find, with only 1 recorded on the PAS (& it has damage) It also states; 'This is a find of note and has been designated: Regional importance'

When you think that a Roman Soldier wore this as part of their kit & they turn up in forts, its interesting to think what sort of site we have. All the Brooches, lots of coins, maybe a mansio site :icon_scratch:

It does blow my mind that this was Roman Military :o In such amazing condition, any museum would be proud.

I have to vote BANNER on this......what a super find! You are in such an enviable position having access to this incredible stockpile of history. I do have to wonder how the Romans got that zinc penny from America?? ::)

Nice one mate :icon_thumleft:, very similar to this one http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/392694
I can't wait to see what else comes off that field :laughing7:

hammered

That's the one I used in my first post  :D It's the only one on the PAS & the UKDFD was down last night, just checked it & only one similar recorded:
http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=3850&cat=all
So the 2 UK databases only have 2 recorded examples :o
What a weekend & you will not have to wait long, as I'm off out soon

I'm sure you hit your places as hard as a man can but this spot you've located really has some incredible finds. Fast and hard, then slow and easy. Just can't imagine what other finds lurk below the surface.
