Hi TNetters :icon_thumleft:

Today I had this feeling, I don´t know if you have experienced it, you hold your breath and the small hairs on the back of your neck rise and you get goosebumps ! :wav:

I was searching my newly found place from the Iron age. Many brooches and other finds have come from this place during the last two weeks. The finds reach from the Roman Iron Age about 100 AD to the early Viking Age about 800 AD.

I had a very good signal with my Vaquero and picked up a smal item full of dirt.
At first I thought it was some modern item like a small devise from a motor or some electrical instrument.

Then I noticed that there was a little bit of golden shining in the middle of the circle that was full of dirt.
I took my water bottle from my pocket and washed it carefully. The dirt fell out, and ...

THE MIGHTY NORSE GOD ODIN / WODAN STARED AT ME !!

As the first person for maybe 1.400 years I saw his face.
That was when I got that feeling that I mentioned at the top.

It is made of pure silver and the small face in the circle (messures 1,2 cm) is golden.
The find is with very big certainty depicting the highest god Odin / Wodan of the old Norse religion, because the image is known among others from the ancient Sceata Coins. It seems to be a small broche / clasp of some kind. The archaeologists will examin it more closely.

Today I am a very happy man ! :blob10:

This find is absolutely unique. :hello2:

Re: THE MIGHTY NORSE GOD LOOKED AT ME !!!

Are you saying it's made of silver AND gold??
That alone would be an amazing find, but to add history to it = GOOSEBUMPS!

Be sure to update your title (THE MIGHTY NORSE GOD LOOKED AT ME ) when you have info from the archeologists.

CONGRATULATIONS! I am pea-green with envy. But in a good way!

Seen this image on a few items but button brooch springs to mind first, not that yours is, no idea :icon_scratch: What does the back look like?

I know/you know this is a special & very commercial image & find :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: I would love one of those

Above is the most common use of the image on a brooch.

Thanks all :icon_thumleft:

@Born free

It is silver and it is gold plated in the circle with the face.

@CRUSADER

Thanks !
It is not a brooch of that kind.
It would rather be a kind of clasp I think.

Here some detail photos ! :hello:

I know, just giving an example of the image that I have seen elsewhere  (which would date it somewhat).

Now that you have posted the reverse, I'm at a complete loss, but can't wait to see what you find out.

Forgot to vote, but it is a no brainer  (going in now)

Hmm, very nice find mate. Looks to me like maybe a small chain or strap may have gone through it. Might be horse related or a sword belt/scabbard clip. I'll wait for the experts opinions lol.

Banner! Well done.

Re: THE MIGHTY NORSE GOD LOOKED AT ME !!!

Thank you all ! :icon_thumleft:

The find has now by an archaeologist, from the pictureres, beyond any doubt been dated to the Early Germanic Ironage period. (375-550 AD). He wrote to me that the stile is very characteristic for the period.
The function of the find is still uncertain.

This means that the find is actually somewhat older than I thought.
It would then be about 1.500-1.600 years old. :hello2:

Re: THE MIGHTY NORSE GOD LOOKED AT ME !!!

7th and 8th Century Anglo-Saxon, Frisian and Jutlandic sceattas feature a depiction often identified as Odin Woden by scholars.
Anglo-Saxon religion

The indigenous pre-Christian belief system of the Anglo-Saxons was a form of Germanic paganism and therefore closely related to the Old Norse religion, as well as other Germanic pre-Christian cultures.

Christianity (particularly the Roman) gradually replaced the indigenous religion of the Saxons in England around the 7th and 8th centuries AD. Christianity was introduced into Northumbria and Mercia by monks from Ireland, but the Synod of Whitby settled the choice for Roman Christianity. As the new clerics became the chroniclers, the old religion was partially lost before it was recorded and today historians' knowledge of it is largely based on surviving customs and lore, texts, etymological links and archaeological finds. :headbang:

I voted Banner on this one !!

My link stated - 'Late 5th to 5th - 6th century AD' which is the style of face I was trying to tell you about (falls within the end period the Archies gave you) :laughing9: :icon_thumright:
