I went out this morning about 7am to have a look at 2 new fields. The first field maybe worth going back to later, but was giving up a lot of iron signals today. We moved to the second field after about an hour and it gave up lead, coins, pistol and musket shot and a beautiful late saxon stirrup-strap mount :thumbsup:. I also found what maybe a strap end, but it needs more cleaning, so I will post it and all the other finds in a separate post. Here is a link to a similar stirrup mount http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=5951&cat=110

here are the pics

Hi "H", it could be a deer but whatever it is, it has long pointy ears :laughing7:

Cheers Colin, I've been staring at it for ages now and I see a big nose, 2 beady eyes, a grinning mouth and high cheek bones, I think I need a break :laughing7:. I might send you a pic of the possible strap end to see if it rings a bell with you?.

OK, now you talking. This is an unpublished Variant of the Class A Type 16. The 1997 book only has 4 examples of the full type 16, I call yours a half version, as its missing most of the middle section (or lower body of animal). I have spotted 7 other full versions, but yours is the first of this type I have seen. EXTREMELY RARE.

BANNER all the way :icon_thumright:

Below is a nice 'full' version;

This would have been right up there in the top finds for this year, if I had it. It would be more special than the Ingot, as its much more interesting,,, to me anyway :headbang:

Thanks "H" :icon_thumleft:, but in truth, I think the criteria for a banner place is a mix of things. A good story, a good find and enough votes. I don't think it is a case of them and us, if there are not enough views and votes the mods don't know about it, it's not their fault. The find, for me, is often good enough. The positive comments on here are a bonus :thumbsup:

Finds like that make me a little jealous...Now i catch when us members talk about us in europe. A find which is near impossible to dig and even more in my part of europe.
I have to come to the uk someday only to get a saxon find...
My vote is in too.
