It's not pretty but I said I would find one and I did - New Jersey Copper!

I went today to a cellar hole I have been at many times. Found a bunch of old buttons - tombacs, dandys and a 1809 half cent and 1838 large cent there. But it has been a while since I have found anything much there. With all the rain we have been getting I noticed that interesting pottery and glass was starting to pop up so I went there today - first time since Hurricane Irene - to see if there would be anything to see.

I did find a few bits. Then I started detecting - I wandered pretty far back from the cellar hole - further than I ever went before and out of the blue came the nice hit :hello2: It wasn't very deep - and it paid the price in corrosion. Plow side is basically gone. But that shield is unmistakable. My first state copper! On March 31st of this year I posted this in one of my Today's Finds threads:

I am researching some early sites settled by groups out of New Jersey. I hold out hope for a NJ copper this year!

I don't have any pictures of the cellar hole from today - but these are from the end of October last year when I first started hunting it. The hole itself is filled with modern type trash :-\

Congrats on your first state copper coin, and a NJ to boot  I have been looking and looking and so far, just not enough of anything to help narrow it down to the year, but it does look like one with 3 lines per pale in the shield, so that eliminates quite a few, but not enough to date. But, still looking............

Now find another state copper, perhaps a nice CT or Vt!!!

Congrats, even in that condition.

A state copper was high on my this years wish list, (just under silver cache.) On the 19 of this month I though I had it, but mine turned out to be a condor token. The season is not over yet !

Thanks everybody ;D Probably my worst condition copper yet but I'm very happy to have it.

Hopefully I will find a few more this fall. A CT and a VT and a Condor token :laughing7:

And a MA.

If that's your worst copper yet, your doing good. about a quarter of the ones I get around here are totally blank.

That's a real nice looking spot you got there, no doubt another keeper there somewhere.
