Back to the Western & Eastern Field, Spanish Silver Buttons, MASS button!

Finally got the call that mom and I have been waiting a year for. The soy beans are cut! And the wheat is not planted as of yet. Made the cover of the W&E back in August? for all of our finds from this 300 acre field. Including 1794 Liberty Cap,NJ copper,1800 Half cent, and 80+ colonial buttons. Went out this morning and tried to put a hurting on a field that we beat the crap out of last year. One thing was different I had my new T2 SE this time. Did not find any coppers but did pull 13 more buttons out and a really cool MASS button that I can not ID. I dont see my variety in Tices book. It does not have stars bordering the front. Find of the day was my moms buttons. She only found 2! But 1 of them was a beautiful 1/2 reale coin button! 1786. When she got home she realized that the other button she dug was in fact ANOTHER 1/2 reale from 178?. What are the chances. I would trade all 13 of mine for one of hers! :notworthy: Little bit of a slow day but there is still more to find. Here's the pics. If anyone could ID the MAss button I would appreciate it! ALso there is a large very deeply domed ornate button that I could use Iding too. Its a beaut.

Thanks guys. Your probably right about the possibility of cufflinks. Maybe theres 2 more to be found ;D ANyone have any possible ID for the Mass button? Or date range for the cone button. Thinking late 18th early 19th century. It would make sense for condisering the other finds.

The Massachusetts button is from the 1820/1830 Massachusetts Militia. That's a GREAT find. I'm so jelous lol.

Those coin buttons or cuff links are unbelievable! Tell your Mom congratulations. If the Massachusetts button is not in Tice's book it dates after the Civil War. That is the great thing about his book it only shows buttons from the Civil War and earlier. Judging from the backmark it probably dates to the Indian War period but I am not an expert.

Re: Back to the Western & Eastern Field, Spanish Silver Buttons, MASS button!

Great finds Jim!

After studying your beautiful Mass button and looking at my references I believe it is an unlisted example. It is close to Alberts #'s 31 & 32 but your button I believe has two distinctive differences. I believe unless I am seeing things, that the Indian has his left hand on his hip and is facing to the right. The other difference is that the bent arm and broadsword at top is bigger than other examples. I couldn't find other examples that showed these differences. This of course is only my humble opinion and maybe the button experts can shed some light for you.

Tell your mom congrats on the great saves and great article about you two in the Sept. issue of Western Eastern!!

Re: Back to the Western & Eastern Field, Spanish Silver Buttons, MASS button!

Thanks again guys. Will unfortunately I posted the pics via photobucket :( I didnt think it would get votes and the picture editor doesnt work on my computer. My 1794 LC didn't make it up top and neither did my 1708 pistareen. They look good in my relic collection though :headbang:
