"Head to Head Comparison" yields a special find!

I decided to take my Tesoro Tejon and my Minelab Explorer XS out to my favorite old "hunted-out" fairgrounds for a little 'head to head comparison' shootout. Nothing all that scientific, I just set up both machines the way I usually hunt them:

Tejon - Sens on 10, Threshold down low, Disc 1 set to "Foil", Disc 2 set to "Tabs", Ground balance a little positive, stock coil

Exp XS - Sens on 24 (Manual), Gain 7, Sounds "Ferrous", Iron Mask -14, stock coil

Anyway, I always read about these guys doing head to head comparisons where for some reason they always find more good old coins than I find in a month... ???

So I figured, hey maybe I'll get lucky, if I go out and fool those buried coins into thinking I"m not really looking for them, just doing a harmless "experiment", the coins will let down their guard and stop hiding so much! Well it worked! Sort of! (I got one definite keeper, but not a handful)... It also helps this was in an area of the old fairgrounds I hadn't yet got to w/ a detector ;D

For reference, the area HAD been hit hard w/ 1980's and early 90's detectors.

Depth was 7 inches, and both detectors indicated a solid "GOOD" signal....

1911-D Barber Quarter, aside from the weird bullseye toning on the cheek, the coin looks to be a full-fledged F-12 condition which makes the value jump dramatically over VG-8 (F-12 books at $90, making it quite a sweet find).

I went back to the site today and found 1 wheat cent (date unknown, still caked w/ dirt), an early blacksmith-made bolt, and (what else?) nails and foil!

I may post the entire results of my head to head comparison test on another section of the forums, if anybody wants to read it.

I might add, I did not do any chemical or abrasive cleaning of this quarter, the light colored lines on the coin are the way it was dug. The only thing I did was first rinse it under water, then soak it in oil overnight and then pat it dry today to try lifting a bit of the dirt. I may resubmerge it for a few months to see if I can get the rest off.

Nice find. found it's little brother here a while back, a 1911-d Barber dime in same shape.

thanks for the replies everyone. I wish every day could be a Barber day.

At least this one I had the sense not to rub the dirt off in the field. ;D ;D

Re: "Head to Head Comparison" yields a special find!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

You know how everybody jokes about swinging two metal detectors, one in each hand? Well for part of this little field trip, that's what I was doing. I just had to keep the coils well apart so they didn't read each other :D

Wirelessworldinc, you will find silver eventually, just keep getting out there and swingin' that coil. When you hit into a site that has wheat pennies, detect the stuffing out of it. Silver will turn up.

That is a sweet quarter! If you're only gonna get one keeper, that's pretty great.

Beautiful find!!! Ugly dame ! Who gave the dame the black eye? Love the coin, but it sure looks like they used Buster Crabb as the model. WTG!!! HH
