Another 'Blood Heat' Thermometer

I got to locate 3 new foundations yesterday, I put them on the 'to do' list and returned to the one where I found the love token and 1818 cent.
the first four pix are the 'New' foundations, I believe the two stones in pic 2 are grave markers... these new ones are small homesteads, the 5th pic shows the 'Centerhearth' where I hunted, it was a large grand home by Colonial standards, three entrances, the front one has a massive granite entry step,
a slab about 5'X5' and 15" thick! you can see part of it to the right of the tree.
it is really difficult to show these structures in a photo, they are so much more impressive to see in person....
spent 3 hours or so, picking inch by inch through the iron & junk, and after all the hiking today was pretty beat.
Not much found, period brass thermometer backing, range from -40 to 140 degrees, 'blood heat', at 100, 'Sunny' at 75 'temperate', at 65 'freeze', at 32, and
'zero' at zero, second of this type by different Mfgs I've found, saw another posted on tnet also. (johnnyblaze?) 3 different companies using the same script temp descriptions, kinda interesting, bottom pic in reply is the one I dug before.
a stamped steel spoon for Quindy :hello:
and another pewter shaker top :dontknow:
Got the remains of what may have been a ferrotype photo brooch (the pin orientation is across the short axis, good for a portrait, unusual otherwise... :icon_scratch:
also a Percussion cap (much bigger than the ones for my 1859 "New Army" rep)
and what I thought was a handgun shell, is actually a .410 base :D
I've now gone over this site very carefully and plucked out what was left :laughing7:
I think....
Thanks for looking !! HH All

Very cool! Your percussion cap is what is referred to as a "tophat" musket cap. percussion caps for smaller calibers usually didn't have that flat "brim" around the bottom. Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like it may not have been fired? I see you got the repro New Army...very nice!

Re: Another 'Blood Heat' Thermometer

Those probably are grave markers.

Yes a "grand" place that was in it's day. The few cellars I've happened upon are small.

The hiking is good for you.

Re: Another 'Blood Heat' Thermometer

I was getting wooried that you had lost your touch on the spoons Herbie but your "Spoonbill Will" title remains intact. Those thermometers show up in CW hospital sites. The physicians held a tube of mercury against the brass scale so I was told. Great recovery. AND NO Dman and Modern Miner, I had not had my temperature taken that way-LOL. HH, Quindy.

Thanks all!
I got a few new sites to search now!
AU, The cap has 'Rifling' marks ??? and measures .310", its 'brim' is cracked and uneven. Love the procedure for loading that .44 :D
Rick, those markers are a short distance behind one of the homesites, will avoid THAT area ....
Antiquarian, the new sites hold some promise, hoping for a big US silver soon :hello2:

Quindy, Everyone has their temp taken that way sometime :laughing9:
I got a much heavier iron soupspoon yesterday along with a few other items... will get a post up later. HH All ;D

Nice digs. Love the site pics, looks like a neat place to hunt. I found a "blood heat" thermometer back like that at an old farmhouse. WTG :icon_thumright:
