Pulled up this 8' copper lightning rod today. It was buried vertically in the roadside. Maybe it protected a house that predated the current development.

This is the medal you get when you join the Sacred Heart Auto League founded in 1955. It's a group whose members pledge to drive safely and pray for safe driving. The medal is intended to be mounted inside the auto. Found near the rod.

It is a grounding rod that a house electrical system is attached to with a bare copper wire. Next time your are in Home Depot or Lowes look in the electrical department and you'll see new ones.

I should have said grounding rod. the rod on the roof - if there is one - is called the lightning rod. Odd how it was in the roadside. Must of been a house there before the present road grid was laid out.
