VERY RARE EARLY CONNECTICUT ONE PIECE MILITARY BUTTON EAGLE,SHIELD & STARS

got out today & went back to one of my very 1st cellar holes.worked it slower and dug everything.aside from the few flat buttons I thought my finds of the day were the key & small buckle until i started cleaning the buttons.
the last button i was cleaning with just water running over it I saw a shield :o
what a shock when this design emerged after cleaning.
backmark is TREBLE GILT with the Connecticut seal in the shield.
Leddel says it's most likely War of 1812 ish.any other thoughts from you guys?

Awesome button...congrats on the button, the banner and the fact that it is very very rare.

You have had some great finds over the last 12 months...keep it up.

Good luck on your next hunt.

Thanks for this info Neil! so....what does it mean that mine has a backmark? and no backmarks listed? :icon_scratch:

Based on the description I would think that the fact that some of these were overstruck on civilian buttons there may be a few different varieties floating around. The fact that your's is not listed may mean it is a previously unknown variety, at least at the time Tice first published his book in 1997.

I can't see the back making a whole lot of difference, and would only be big news if it was a variant, meaning the face is different. I see it as rarity first, then condition, then probably size a little over whether the loop is intact, and finally the back. It might be different if there was a history to the maker, but with it simply saying Treble Gilt I can't imagine it will matter. Not that it's not worthy of being noted in a book, because I'm sure it is, I just don't think it would matter much to collectors or the historical significance of the find. If we ever see a button book come out for this period it should be submitted.

To be honest I'd probably pick a big money button over rarity if given the choice, but there's just something special about having a button you just can't go out and buy.

Conrats on a super rare militia button from your home state! Nice job cleaning it too. The key looks like a barrel tap key and the buckle is a little unusual. I find it always pays to go back to old sites that were productive and work them slow digging the "iffy" signals. Sometimes the last finds to come out of a site are the best

As IP has stated, the backmark being different does not make it a different variety at all, if you check in Albert's book, I know like for a NY state milita button, one of them(NY 30) he states simply, "It is known with the backmark of practically every button maker and outfitter of the period as well as many quality marks". Only a noticeable difference in the design/wording on the face of the button would make a true different variety. Both CT buttons in this post seem to be a match for the one in Albert's book, so same variety, regardless of backmark.

Again, sure is one nice looking button.

Congrats on a well deserved Banner Dave. I'm certainly no button expert as some profess to be on Tnet but I knew it was pretty rare. You were smart and had it authenticated by a rreal button expert (William). WTG, Quindy.

HMN I have not signed in in a couple of days so I like the other miltary button gurus are astonished by this button find. Ive seen many over the years but have not come across this specimen except in Albert's book. It is a terrific piece and its monetary value if in the several hundred dollars is far exceeded by its historical value. Congratulations on a well deserved banner!
