1600s Portugese Hammered Silver 'Cruzado'

Hi all,
Dug a few ships spikes, old buttons, hardware, functional reel, and a coin.
can't find a positive ID,
this one is about 38mm and 18 grams,
Crown over shield, splayed end cross.

Thanks to Iron Patch, SilverSearcher, and everyone else who contributed :notworthy:
we now know it's an undated 400 Reis Cruzado from the
reign King John IV of Portugal 1640-1656.
Thanks for looking and happy hunting All! ;D

I would say its French due to the fleur de lis. Outstanding!

Looks like a Portugal Reis, or at least something relatively old and Portuguese.

Once again IP, :notworthy:
Found a gold Reis with the design and the following info:
"The cross and crowned arms design is prevalent on Portugese coinage of the period. This page applies to gold coins. But there were many silver coins with very similar design."
Gotta keep looking for the match, 38mmX18GR,
Thanks all!

What is throwing me off from making a match is the shield on your coin... in the top right of the shield yours seems to have a design that looks like the shape of a ducks head. Do you think that's part of the coin, or just do to the condition? The other thing is the crown on your coin seems more like what I have seen on the 18th and 19th century coins and not the real early stuff. (at least the one I just seen) Yes they used that cross for a long time and on many coins.

Re: 16th C French Hammered Silver ?

BTW... 18 grams seems very under weight for a 38mm silver coin so you probably have a counterfeit. Unless you meant to write 28 grams?

Re: 16th C French Hammered Silver ?

Was just looking at a few, and they seem to be lighter than expected, so that's good! I also can't imagine why the crowned arms would change that much, and it really wouldn't make sense, so what doesn't match is probably just a condition issue.

So I'd say there's a good chance you have a real 1700s or 1800s silver, something like a 400 reis. I'm looking at one right now which is 35mm, and 14.6 grams so that jives with your diameter and weight.

I have things to do but will check back in to see what you come up with.

Hi Herbie , Fascinating .. I like to call em' , Early Explorer finds ! :o like that hammered Bill D. in Va just found. There have been at least two or more early 18 th century , milled Portugese gold coin finds on the Cape May beach this past Fall . . Dredging has spit them out onto the beach , a few were still in the pipe . The Earliest explorer coin that would be relative to this area of Jersey would be Dutch , Henry Hudson 's Half Moon , in 1610 . Been on recent hunts of old whaling areas ... No luck . I like to find anything that possibly has a connection to the first explorations and I hope your coin has that early settlement history connection and rare as well 8) dawg

:read2:

Nice find :notworthy: It looks like a coin of Manuel I 1495-1521 (Portugal) if Silver it could be a"Indio" - a silver coin minted in 1499.
