The club leased a piece of land to hunt for the day. It was tough hunting but I managed to dig my first whole artillery shell. A 3 inch Dyer Shell. :hello2:
The darn thing was bout 2 1/2 feet down. I wasn't digging much and new that a large amount of artillery was used in the area so I started digging.
I all so dug a large shell fragment from a navy gun boat and a carbine bullet.
Some of the other guys dug a silver 3 cent peice, a 6 pound Borman cannon ball, a large cent, some flat buttons and various bullets. :icon_thumright:

Update, finished shell in last picture. I'm very happy with the results. The shell came out great and the picture dosn't do it justice. It's looks much nicer when you have it in your hands. :laughing7:

Re: Dyer Artillery shell!

Congrats on that Dyer shell!! Are you going to electrolyze it or just leave it as is? Looking at how chunky it is, I'll bet there's a nice solid shell underneath!

Re: Dyer Artillery shell!

I'm going to clean it up and have it disarmed. If the bottom is any indication this thing will look great cleaned. I'll post more pictures when it's cleaned up a bit. ;D

Nice shell don't see them dug very often. Looks like a paper fuse well soak in a bucket of waster and the power may was out then flush with a hose. Harry Ridgeway in Winchester will disarm it for 20 bucks if it needs drilled. He did a few of mine and has a safe and sweet rig set up.

Re: Dyer Artillery shell!

Thanks for looking.
After much deliberation I decided to disarm it my self. :read2: Having a paper fuse made it easy. If it had a percussion fuse I would have had someone else do it. I just ran a drill bit down the hole by had under water a little bit at a time till I got to the bottom. Then I flushed it with water till all the black stuff came out. Then repeated a few more times just for good measure. I've been soaking it in the electric bucket for for a few days. It held up good, now it's in the oven cooking all the water out of it. :blob8: Tomorrow I will pick the rest of the bad spots and give it a good coating. Haven't decided what to coat it with yet. Some suggestions would be appreciated. :icon_scratch:
