More finds from my "hunted out" coin spill site
As many of you regulars know I stumbled across a nice little early coin spill in a remote corner of a site a couple months ago. But before that my friend Reid and I had run into what appeared to be a small early military camp in the same field while searching for a homesite I had found on a CW map. We dug 70 buttons that first day, and went back several times and thought we had it cleaned out pretty good. But one day last week we were back at the site roaming around looking for another hotspot when Reid located the battery to the electric fence that had been giving us fits in the button hotspot. So since the cows were off in another field we shut off the fence temporarily which made a world of difference. I also decided to hunt 90 degrees to the way I hunted there before and made sure I stuck the coil in between all the cut cotton stalks. Well, needless to say, the site was definitely not hunted out like we thought. We probably dug 25 buttons between us that day. I later went back twice more and personally ended up with around 40 buttons total in the 3 trips. That's almost embarrassing after thinking there wasn't any more brass left. But that will be a good lesson for the future. I also finally pulled a cut piece of silver the last time there which was a long time coming. I've hunted 2-3 similar early camps in this county over the last 2-3 years and all have been loaded with spanish silver. But all I have to show for this camp is one cut piece and a VA halfpenny. That's OK, though, as the coin spill a 1/4 mile away more than made up for that. And the good thing is that we're still not through hitting that button area. Hopefully I'll have more to post later. The first pic below are some of the more interesting finds from the last time out and the other is all my finds from the 3 recent trips to the "hunted out" site.
