Most of this week has been sub-zero temperatures & the ground was frozen to about 3 inches but the snow didn't start until after we had finished 4 hours hunting new fields. We tried 3 of the 4 sprayed off fields (failed crops) which are close to our Roman Sites but we have never tried. I got the shock of my life when 1 hour into the hunt & whilst wandering about the 2nd field I dug my oldest coin ever :headbang: We went on to grid this area with no other signs, including no lead. So someone was looking over me today & my Gold streak continues...

Other finds:
USA Lead Seal - Meat Inspection (WWI-WWII ?)
1836 Silver Four Pence - William IV :)
1854 Cinq Centimes
Really nice complete & still ringing Crotal Bell :)

Gallic War Type circa 55BC
Gold Stater
Gallo-Belgic E - imported from Gaulish tribe of Ambiani
Just over 6g of Gold :blob7:
VA56-1

These coins were produced for payment to mercenary for one of the most famous Celtic battles in Roman History. Lead by a great Celtic Warrior called Vercingetorix against the armies of Julius Ceasar. It amazes me to think how & why this was imported into our country across the sea for trade or by warriors fleaing Europe to a safe island. :o

This coin now equals Dads oldest coin & is nearly a matching pair, other than mine is a VA56-1 & Dads is a VA54-1. 8)

That is a phenomenal find! :hello2:

You almost make this look easy--but of course I know it is far from that.

The time, the elements, the exhaustion...the sheer number of holes it takes to dig the Quality of finds that you dig. I'm speechless.

I have no question believing that is the absolute truth. Finding old stuff is obviously easier to do in the UK, but you certainly don't see many posting this quality, and as often. Even people who live on this side of the pond often think just because you live in an old area it comes easy, but that's not always, and sometimes not at all.
I used the same words with Dad yesterday; 'I'm making this look easy'.....& we laughed.....

It was easy yesterday when I wandered over 3 different fields of about 80-100 acres & just happened to walk over the right spot. That kind of luck is kind of easy but we never found any good signs in any of those fields, even next to a field that was full of Roman Coins & objects. We were 'hoping' for a gold from this land because we had found 1 silver Celtic & a couple of Bronze, but this Gold was fields away from the other stuff :dontknow:
For the most part you touched on why it happens; time spent in the field & number of nails/trash removed. I have too much energy & I waste it on digging lots of holes quickly
